J'ouvert or Jouvay is at the heart of Trinidad carnival, and is also celebrated in other Eastern Caribbean islands. The name J'ouvert originates from the French jour ouvert, meaning day break or morning, and signals the start of the bacchanalia that is Carnival. Jouvert is highly traditional and full of symbols culture and heritage. It is steeped in tradition and playing mud mas involves participants known as Jab Jabs. covering themselves -- from head to toe - and others in paint, chocolate, mud, white powder or anything for that matter. It is Jouvert custom that no one is clean, and a common site to see a newcomer being hugged by a muddy revelers. This traditional part of Carnival starts at around 2 in the morning and finishing after sunrise. Calypso and soca music are the dominating sounds of Jouvert in Trinidad.

The festival called J'ouvert was over, and the giant parade to follow could begin. Hurrying across Prospect Park I'm drawn toward the percussive din and strains of steel pan that break the pre-dawn tranquility. Emerging near the zoo entrance on Flatbush Avenue, I come face to face with a group of devils. Cheap plastic horns adorn heads smeared in red paint and faces powdered with white talcum. The ghoulish revelers have surrounded the Pantonics steel orchestra, a band of fifty steel pan players and percussionists mounted on two-story moveable racks. The devils, along with hundreds of less elaborately clad party-goers, are jumping up and down to the Pantonic's rendition of the popular calypso "In My House." The band and dancers pulse as one, inching down the road toward Empire Boulevard, then bumping up against the Adlib Steelband and merging into a mile-long sea of humanity. The scene turns surreal as I pass a huge bank of temporary lights that cut through the thick predawn mist, illuminating the fervent crowd and the scores of police who line the street, looking on with great disinterest.
