"Begin the Beguine" is a song written by Cole Porter (1891-1964). Introduced in 1935 by June Knight in the Broadway musical "Jubilee" produced at the Imperial Theatre in New York City. A "beguine" is a spirited ballroom dance. The "beguine" music form comes from Martinique where in local Creole Beke or Begue means a 'white person'. Beguine is the female form of Begue and it is a combination of Latin and French dance music forms that once created frequently requested by the hostesses of dances in Martinique. From there requests for the form had spread to Paris. Ernesto Cortazar (1940-2004), a contemporary classical composer and pianist, had composed background music for more than 500 motion pictures.

"Just One of Those Things" was written by Cole Porter for the 1935 musical "Jubilee." The song was later featured in two Doris Day musicals, "Lullaby of Broadway" (1951) and "Young at Heart" (1954). Peggy Lee recorded it in a stylized arrangement to become a chart topping hit in the 50's. Maurice Chevalier included it in a Cole Porter medley on his farewell album, released on his 80th birthday. The series finale of M*A*S*H took its name "Goodbye, Farewell and Amen" from a line in the song. From the CD, "101 Strings Orchestra: Big Band in Paris."

Cole Porter (1891-1964) composed "Begin the Beguine" in 1935 at the piano in the bar of the Ritz Hotel in Paris. In October of that year the song was introduced by June Knight in the Broadway musical "Jubilee" produced at the Imperial Theatre in New York City. In 1938, bandleader Artie Shaw (in collaboration with Jerry Gray) wrote what remains today the most famous arrangement of the work.

During the Great Depression, the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Pony Express captivated public attention. Boy Scouts carried mail along the trail route and presented it to President Roosevelt, who said This is something fine to add to my stamp collection. This lecture includes photographs and film clips from the Howard R. Driggs Archive at Southern Utah University that capture the excitement of the historic rerun. Driggs, a historian, was president of the Oregon Trail Memorial Association, which sponsored the Diamond Jubilee. Today's speaker Camille Bradford, an attorney in Denver, Colorado, is the stepdaughter of Howard R. Driggs and founder of the Howard R. Driggs Memorial Foundation. Song written by Cole Porter for the 1935 musical Jubilee. The song has become a standard, with many recordings having been made of it. Among artists who have recorded it are Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Bing Crosby, Doris Day, Lena Horne, Frank Sinatra, Mel Torme, Louis Prima, Diana Krall, John Barrowman, Lionel Hampton, Oscar Peterson, Nellie McKay, Erin McKeown, Joan Morris, Jamie Cullum and The Pogues with Kirsty MacColl. It was just one of those things Just one of those crazy flings One of those bells that now and then rings Just one of those things It was just one of those nights Just one of those fabulous flights A trip to the moon on gossamer wings Just one of those things If we'd thought a bit before the end of it When we started painting the town We'd have been aware that our love affair Was too hot not to cool down So good-bye, dear, and amen Here's hoping we meet now and then It was great fun But it was just one of those things

Thomascows version of "Begin the Beguine" is a song written by Cole Porter and introduced by June Knight in the Broadway musical Jubilee (1935). In my youth I thought upon this as a new beginning to the world, and though the two words are very similar in pronunciation The beguine referred to a ballroom dance that was pushing to become popular at that time. Porter was a great writer and far ahead of his time. Enjoy
Some music critics cite Artie Shaw's 1938 recording of "Begin the Beguine" as the beginning of "modern orchestration". I'm not so sure about that, but it's a good place to start since it does seem that most recordings after this was released do have a more "modern" sound to them. Whether this was a technological advancement or purely a product of a change in the orchestration of music in the late 1930's, I could not say. "Begin The Beguine" was written a few years earlier by Cole Porter at a piano at the Ritz Hotel Bar in Paris and introduced in the 1935 Broadway musical, "Jubilee".

Kamala Jharia's real name was Kamala Singha. She lived in the palace of the Maharaja of Jharia (now in Dhanbad district, coal capital of India, Jharkhand state, India). Her parents probably worked in the palace in some capacity. The surname Singha is common in several Hindi speaking northern and north western states of India as also in Bengal but there is no doubt that she was a Bengalee by birth. Mr K. Mallick (real name was Qamal Malik) who at the time was a very popular gramophone singer, was invited to the palace to sing at the court of Maharaja Shiva Prasad on the occasion of his marriage. The Maharaja was so pleased with K. Mallick's performance that he appointed him court singer in Jharia. K Mallick had to stay back at Jharia for sometime during which he discovered Kamala's musical talent and brought her to Calcutta and introduced her to HMV authorities. Kamala recorded four songs for HMV and went back to Jharia. She was paid sixty five Rupees only for the four songs. Her first published record was a red label one, numbered N 3137 in 1930. The songs were a) Priya Jeno Prem Bhulo Na, a Ghazal and b) Nithur Nayan Baan Keno Hano, a Dadra. Lyricist for both the songs was _Dhiren Das_. The authorities had some problem in naming the artiste. They knew her name but not her surname. They could not credit her as Miss Kamala because there was already one singer of the same name. Finally it was decided to identify her as Miss Kamala (Jharia) keeping in mind her then usual ...
