Home of Hope has 3 volunteers serving 13 children with cerebral palsy and many of them with malaria also. The home has only ONE sponsor. They need money for rent, linens and hygienic needs. Moses' Place is home to 25 young boys taken off the street ranging from ages 6-14. They are outcasts from society with nothing to offer Moses (the home leader) but their troubles. They need sponsors, money for rent and food supplies. Fresh Fire orphanage hasn't seen a paycheck in 7 years though they've been promised one. The women have their own children stay at the orphanage to be with them. They run a daycare on the side to help provide some monetary means for running the orphanage. They are in need of a new house for the girls as 8 of them now cram into a small room with 5 mattresses. The plan is to provide building materials and then help in closing off a chicken coupe outside the home to be used as a new lodging room as well as helping financially and physically expanding the garden that is used to provide for much of their food. MONTREAL While he was smuggling drugs into the Montreal Detention Centre where he worked as a guard, Pierre Arold Agnant dreamed of using the money to buy a luxury home he could retire to in his native Haiti. His accommodations for at least the next four years will be considerably less comfortable. Agnant, 47, was sentenced yesterday to the equivalent of a nine-year prison term, less one year for the time he has already served behind bars. Superior Court Justice France Charbonneau also ordered that Agnant must serve half of the remaining eight years of his sentence before he is eligible for parole. Dressed in a dark suit and tie, Agnant did not react to the sentence. He was convicted in December of breach of trust, drug trafficking, conspiracy and committing a crime for a criminal organization. Prosecutor Richard Audet said he believes the nine-year prison term is the harshest sentence a guard has ever received in Canada for smuggling drugs into a prison. In 2008, Alice English, another former guard at the Montreal Detention Centre, received a 66-month sentence for attempting to smuggle in drugs. In her case the court heard evidence she made just one attempt. Agnant smuggled in contraband at least 19 times. Because the sentence is more than two years Agnant will likely be deported to Haiti when paroled. Awards and recognition The board recognized the outgoing chair, Shirley Brown-VanArsdale, for her years of a service as a trustee. Nominating committee Trustees Lynn Mitchelson and Melody Rayl agreed to serve as a committee to nominate new board officers, liaisons and committee chairs and members for 2009-2010. Using a Macintosh with AVCHD footage can be time consuming because the Sony HDSR11 footage has to be blown up into large files to do editing. I inserted a shot of an old GM abandoned factory in Detroit in between one of the clips. I immediately thought of this when reviewing it and would have inserted it between one of his speeches for visual effect, but decided it would interrupt the flow of his answer, so it's between two questions. School Board ponders budget, superintendent finalists tonight The District 196 School Board meets tonight at 6 pm at Dakota Ridge School, 4629 144th St. W., in Apple Valley. There are a couple big issue items on the agenda. The Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan School Board is expected to name finalists for the superintendent position. The district received twenty applications for the job and the boards Personnel and Negotiations Committee reviewed them last week. Finalists will visit the district at the beginning of next week for first interviews. A second round of interviews is tentatively scheduled May 4-6 and will include time for parents and residents to meet the candidates. The School Board hopes to have a new superintendent in place when Superintendent John Currie retires June 30. The School Board will also make a decision on budget adjustments for next year due to potential cuts from the state. Last month Currie presented three options to the board making up for $9 million, $10 million and $12 million less funding. At the last meeting, the board indicated it would take the $10 million option, which includes a combination of cuts, savings and new revenue. With about $2.5 million expected in federal stimulus dollars, actual cuts in the scenario would amount to about $4.8 million. Approximately $1.8 million would be cut through salary negotiations.
