London: 8 February 2009 The longest wait in the calendar is the night before the BAFTAs. Fans from all over descend on Covent Garden to wait in the good natured and generally orderly queue for the coveted blue wristband that gains you admittance to the fan zone inside the perimeter fence. The weather kept clear but cold for the wait that began for many at 11pm on Saturday night. Sixteen hours after arrival we were let into the red carpet area to pick a spot. I got a good spot from a weather point of view. As it rained throughout the evening my space under the roof was a winner because I stayed dry and didnt have to hold an umbrella with my slinged arm. The spot was not so good from a footage point of view because the crowds of folk on the red carpet at the dry end blocked great and lingering views with their backs and heads. Next year I think Ill cover the after show party rather than the main event. Sure to get better footage there. At the BAFTAs the great and the good were generally able to sign and pose, but only for a lucky few due to time and the fact there was such a long barrier, about 200m in all. Many fans went away disappointed but happy to have been there.
