An Overview Of Our World Renowned Fully Guided Brown Bear Viewing Adventures
Join ous on a trip from Kodiak Island, Across theshelikof Strai, To Geographic point at Katmai Nat. Park. We sat by a "hole" in the river and let the bears come close to eat fish. There were up to 29 bears we could count closeby at one time. We had at least 17 at any one time. We felt safe since they were interested in eating their salmon. Some were so close that we could almost have reached out and touched them. Only at one time did we think of using our "mass" for protection. The plan was to have us all stand up at the same time on the count of 3. Fortunaltely at the count of 1, the approaching bear turned away. Three hours of "communing with nature!"
Fly with us across the Shelikof Strait and sit by a "fish hole" in the river. Bears come to eat and get so close that either we could have touched them our they could have "touched" us if they wanted. Only at one point did we plan to all stand up together to scare a bear that was a little too close. The plan was to stand on the count of 3. By the count of 1, the bear turned back. Mothers in particular liked to bring their young close, because males preferred to avoid humans.

He was wandering around looking for his friends. But they were actually the opposite direction from where he flew off to. Oh well.
This was a morning with perfect weather. It started raining later in the day, but the morning was excellent. The duck was squawkin' because his (her?) friends had ditched him. He was trying to find them.
This was, unfortunately, the only Bear we saw in the 2 days we were there. Though he was out a lot, and very photogenic.

The ranger said that no one really knows exactly why they jump. Maybe to impress a mate. Maybe they think they can fly. Maybe other reasons. Maybe its because their brains are the size of a pea. It was really cool to see. This was going on all day long. It was hard to catch on camera because you never knew where the next one would jump from. Funny... they stopped jumping when the bear waded through.... so they're not THAT stupid.

Our first day at Katmai, June 26th, 2009. Within minutes of landing, we decided the steep price tag was well worth it.

That bridge is the only way to get to upper falls. It is closed very often since so many bears swim around it.

Flight with Emerald Air out of Homer to Katmai National Park Alaska...what a wonderful educational trip by guides Ken and Chris Day. Highly recommend their tours to see the brown bears on Katmai.
Katmai National Park is not just about Brooks Falls. The start of this National Park was the eruption of Mt Katmai in 1912. The Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes is what was the result of this eruption and the still active volcanos. The ash from that eruption changed the landscape of the area bringing about more vegetation and the support and wealth of wildlife in the area. To get there one takes an all terrain school bus from where the main area of Katmai National Park. The ride is over rough terrain and across raging streams but is well worth it. The brown around the rushing rivers is ash from that eruption. It is a definite must see.
