The third installment in my lesson series, "Shred Guitar". This lesson is on a cool lick from the Marty Friedman tune "Dragon Mistress" The riff incorporates the Japanese Pentatonic scale known as "Hirajoshi" the Hirajoshi mode is most simply explained as a Phrygian mode with an omitted 3rd degree. This scale originated in Japan during the 17th century and was made popular in the Western world by guitarists Marty Friedman and Jason Becker during the 1980's when they were in the shred guitar group "Cacophony" on Mike Varney's Shrapnel Records.
