Southern California's Channel Islands have some of the most beautiful kelp forests in the world. These kelp forests are a major attraction for divers which led to the creation of a dive preserve at casino point on Catalina Island. Scuba diving magical gardens of kelp at southern California Channel islands around labour day 2009 (4-8.9.2009) featuring bliss of kelp with soft enchanted light filtering through to the depths of ocean. Schools of sardins and blues with magnificent hydrocoral and occasional batrays made this trip truly one for the books! California diving at its best. Actually - any diving at its best! We were onboard Vision liveaboard from Truthaquatics on this trip and visited beautiful kelp forests at divesites such as Farnsworth banks and Pyramid cove arch at Anacapa, San Celement and Catalina islands.
The Monterey Bay Aquarium helped the US Postal Service kick off National Stamp Collection Month Thursday morning, Oct. 1, 2009 by unveiling a new stamp collection under water. A large pane featuring the new "Nature of America: Kelp Forest" stamp series was unveiled under water in the Kelp Forest exhibit by Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary and Monterey Bay Aquarium divers. This video shows just the underwater unveiling. The series highlights the lush undersea ecosystem in which kelp -- a type of seaweed -- grows. Featured on the stamps are 27 creatures that live in, and around, the kelp forest. The public was invited to the Kelp Gallery to watch the ceremony, where first-day-of-issue souvenirs were available. The kelp forest stamps are the 11th in the Nature of America stamp series. I've been lucky enough to dive several kelp beds along the coast in warm water with good visibility. These are short clips taken from 2 full days of diving.
June 7th 2009 at Catalina Dive park using the Xracer 300x350 Sea Scooter. I mounted my Sea & Sea DX1200HD camera onto the front of the scooter and filmed as I drove threw the kelp.

It is just as amazing and glorious as the Amazon Rain Forest or the Sequoia's. Presently a burgeoning sea urchin population is threatening our kelp forests. Fortunately The Santa Monica Baykeeper and the Kelp Project are doing something about it. Tom Ford and Brian Meux, from the Santa Monica Baykeeper, take us on a tour of the kelp forest and show us how they are making every effort to help the kelp forest regenerate and flourish.
