Kim Darby (born Deborah Zerby on July 8, 1947 in Los Angeles, California) is an American actress, daughter of professional dancers John and Inga Zerby. She began acting at age 15 and has appeared in many films and television shows. Her first appearance was as a dancer in the 1963 film Bye Bye Birdie. Among her best known roles are True Grit (1969), Better Off Dead (1985), and Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995). After appearing in True Grit, film critics predicted that she was at the beginning of a long career as a great and famous actress. In fact, since the film came out, she has made almost no films of note. This has caused some critics to consider her in the same category as Bo Derek (in 10), Maria Schneider (in Last Tango in Paris) because all three actresses made spectacular splashes in one film with critic after critic saying they were going to have a great career, but, in fact, they never acted in any film nearly as successful again.

As the film begins, Norwood Pratt (Campbell) has just finished his enlistment in the United States Marine Corps, and is on his way home. A musician, his one great ambition is to appear on the radio program Louisiana Hayride. Along the way, he meets a variety of characters, including a flim-flam man (Hingle), a jaded would-be starlet (Sterling) and his Marine buddy (Namath).
However, the most important person that he meets is Rita Chipman (Darby), the "right kind of girl," who is unfortunately an unwed, soon-to-be mother (in an age where this was uncommon and somewhat shameful). She supports him and is there when he finally reaches the KWKH studio as his dream comes true. The final scene shows her proudly watching Norwood as he goes on the air with the...
