I worked on this sporadically, so it's difficult to estimate how much time went into it. Somewhere between 500-1000 hours, but it was a labor of love. Using the wonderful words of acclaimed writer, actor and allround know it all (I mean that in the best of ways) Stephen Fry I have created this kinetic typography animation. If you like what you hear you can download the rest of the audio file from Mr. Fry's website. stephenfry.com and then go to the audio and video section at the top of the page and look for the file entitled language. You can also find the file on iTunes by searching the name 'Stephen Fry's Podgrams'. I loved this particular essay on language and I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to make my first kinetic typography video. I hope you like it and even if you dont I would like to heard what you think in the comments section. Also I know that at points the audio does not match the text so you do not have to write that. It is because I copied the transcript off of Stephen's website and it was not 100% exactly what he said and i did not notice until I was well underway. However these cases are few and far between. Just incase you were wondering the programs I used to make this were all by Adobe. Mostly After Effects but also Flash and Illustrator. Flash for the changing background colour transitions and illustrator for putting the words in to the shape of 'language' before loading it into After Effects to animate. Enjoy

Here is an explanation of the perennial science fiction weapon. LASERS. Every show uses them but do any of them really know why? Here I explain the formula behind their power, and using video clips from many recognizable science fiction sources (and other surprises), I segway into another science fiction weapon based on the formula for Kinetic Energy. This weapon isnt what sci-fi says, but it is exactly what it means. Despite being my longest movie (10 mins on the nose, thanks for being patient) this one was almost one of my fastest. The plot and general formula for this just flashed into my head with a pang, and I spent a month writing it before I had the spare time to film it, which took me under a month. The whole thing was already in rough cut form in under 2 weeks, which goes to show how valuable pre-preparation is. In addition to Lasers and Kinetic Energy, my original idea was to mention Nuclear Weapons far more extensively, using each weapon in the context of what TV tells us to expect vs what the disappointing reality will be. That idea is expressed in the laser section, but then dropped in favor of Kinetic Energy's history lesson, which I found more entertaining. I didnt plan on using Lord of the Rings footage when I started, but when in the middle of hard-boiled movie-making, the movie gives you its ideas and you had better follow. Hey, I've come to realize, that no matter how you put it, I'm not really entitled to offer this for download at all. I've removed the download link. For all you blink fans, here's something to spark your nostalgia. It's my first take on a typography project and I had to learn how to use After Effects from scratch to do it. You can really appreciate how the video gets better and more complicated towards the end as I got more confident and proficient at using the software. PLEASE watch it till the end and in HIGH QUALITY, or else you might miss the best parts. It took me quite a while to finish and I continued working on it through exams at uni and other school work. Fortunately I passed all my courses with good grades (I'm studying photovoltaic engineering at UNSW, in case anyone's wondering). Enjoy!

This is my third experiment with Kinetic Typography. This one is by far the best. I'm in love with the background I made. Also, bear in mind that I don't have After Effects, so I had to do this all by hand, frame by frame. My first two took me roughly 12 hours, but this one took me 5 days. It was sooo worth it. The last few seconds are the best part. Dialogue is from the Firefly episode "Out of Gas", my favorite.

FLARE is a pneumatic building facade system. The FLARE system consists of a number of tiltable metal flake bodies. An infinite array of flakes can be mounted on any building or wall surface in a modular system of multiplied 4x4 FLARE units. Each stainless steel flake reflects the bright sky or sunlight when in vertical standby position. When the flake is tilted downwards by a computer controlled pneumatic piston, its face is shaded from the sky light and this way appears as a dark pixel. By reflecting ambient or direct sunlight the individual flakes of the FLARE system act like pixels formed by natural light. The system is controlled by a computer to form any kind of surface animation. Sensor systems inside and outside the building communicate the buildings activity directly to the FLARE system which acts as the buildings lateral line.
