As Fall sets in I was reminded of how processing of Kodachrome 40 will cease at the end of December 2010 (as per Dwaynes Photo in Kansas). So the rush is on to get all of my remaining stock filmed and developed before then. It's a good time of the year, especially with the foliage and it's beautiful colors here in the Northeast. As I looked through my supplies I ran across this roll marked "K-40 Fall '08" and remembered it was a cartridge with an expiration date of 2005. I was amazed at how it's almost grainless in appearance, along with the crisp color-rich images it displays. It will be very missed. Here's to Kodachrome 40. Let's hope Dwayne's extends their deadline. DIY Telecine
UPPM Music Used in Kodak 1992 Kodachrome Film Test Song Title: Breath Composer: Gregg Lehrman Original Publisher: Killer Tracks Song Title: Kindle Composer: Ronni Shaw / Boris Nonte Original Publisher: Killer Tracks To license music used in this video, please go to www.unippm.com.hk
If you haven't seen the mesmerizing original, please do: www.youtube.com One thing though that I thought could use improvement was the soundtrack. In my opinion, the chosen music doesn't quite capture the remarkable poignancy of this footage so I changed it to Shostakovich's Romance from the film "The Gadfly". The performers are Tasmin Little (violin) and Piers Lane (piano). See what you think.

This is very rare Kodachrome Super 8 Sound movie film in the 200' cartridge. No longer available and can only be used in Super 8 sound movie cameras which can use take the 200' loads. I did hear that you can modify a 50' sound movie camera to take the 200' cartridge. Super 8 sound film has a magnetic stripe along both sides of the film, where the audio is recorded in sync with the picture. The easiest and cheapest way to record sync sound with your Super 8 sound camera. I recently shot some of this film and I have a sample posted online here. vimeo.com I do have this film for sale on eBay. Please check out my site: cgi.ebay.ca

In this footage, a Panasonic HVX200A was used, not film. But our color correction masks the type of camera used and brings the picture to equal the tonality and saturation of a Kodachrome-like film stock with our touch of slight sepia tones.

The original 3min. raw telecine footage of my 1974 Kodachrome 8mm 18fps film, has been enhanced with Avisynth. I think it shows an improvement on the original video I posted a few years ago? The projector gate had been enlarged. Above and below frames, and sprocket hole can be seen on the raw telecine.

Remarkable silent film, 16mm Kodachrome movie film, YouTube of it's day. Probably the first color film ever made of a volcanic eruption. Mokuaweoweo Crater eruption filmed probably in late 1935 by Harold T. Stearns, a USGS Hydrologist-Volcanologist. The lava fountains are hundreds of feet high, the erupting fissure inside the crater is about two thousand feet long. The crater floor is at an elevation of 13100' ASL. Stearns is flying in an open cockpit at an altitude of around 15000' ASL. View the entire film (1 hour, 6 min) at: mms://video.wr.usgs.gov/movies/early_hawaiian_volcanoes.wmv
Some quick test shots of an old roll of Kodachrome 40 with a Yashica Super Electro 800 camera with a modified gate to allow the image to film over the area designated for sound striping. The enlarged gate on my projector makes it possible to telecine this area. Many of the shots were from long to short since I wanted to make sure there were no focusing issues (I had read focal lengths could be an issue on some cameras with this modification). I used the oldest film I have just to get an idea of this camera. More testing (with better stock) to follow. The Yashica Super Electro 800 is a fully automatic-metering camera, and on some of them the readings swing wildly back and forth especially when measuring from f 16 and up (perhaps due to their cds' age). Glad to have found this one was pretty steady. DIY Telecine Processed by Dwayne's Photo

Singapore 1986 shot on 8mm cine kodachrome. My dad took this on one of those fancy looking 1960s Bolex movie cameras. In the film are my Mum Lilian, Auntie Marjorie and Uncle Harold. My mum died 3 years later and I have so little cine film of her, so I have decided to put her on Yuotube for prosperity.

A Magical Film about the "Wild Orchids in Israel". If you like TimeLapse or Flowers, this is probably the greatest Super 8mm nature film ever made. Totally self-funded and Ten Years in the making, the amazing beauty of the Wild Orchids of Israel has painstakingly been captured on stunning Kodachrome film by esteemed cinematographer Doron Hirshberg . The film was originally broadcast on the BBC in 1987. Not satisfied, Doron spent another three years shooting more footage to include more scenes about the actual pollination process. When finally ready to re-edit all the films in 2007, Doron flew from Israel to CinePost in Atlanta in order to produce a scratch and dirt-free Telecine Transfer for the new digital masters. Digital editing was completed in late 2007. Duna Televizio (Hungary) will be broadcasting the Restored Master this Winter. The Digital Masters are now ready for any venue with English narration and a stereo M&E track, in either PAL and/or NTSC. Total running time is 60 minutes. To book or rent this film, contact CinePost at firstname.lastname@example.org. It is also available on DVD. Please comment below!

Hitler gets the news. I noticed some Leica fans have noticed this I didn't really think about it when I was thinking of a camera for him to order, so I chose an Leica M9 because it's German. I do think it was stupid for Leica not to change the naming scheme with the move to digital it confuses things. I am part Jewish BTW.

It was quite a surprise going through this and seeing my grandmother meeting Walt Disney himself! I've been doing my best to find out what they were shooting at the front of the park. So far I've been unsuccessful. Transferred to HD (1080PsF 23.98) myself off a Spirit and Color Corrected using a da Vinci 2k Plus. Slowed to 18fps to match the original film speed."

Before MTV and music videos... Before video tape... Before digital cameras and digital editing... Back in the days of silent Super-8 film and editing by cutting and gluing the film... I created this (very literal) music video to the tune of Paul Simon's "Kodachrome" during the summer of 1973. To show this on a Super-8 projector required manually starting the film and then precisely dropping the needle on the phonograph record at exactly the right time and exactly the right spot to synchronize my edits to the music. In this digitized version, the film is running at "normal" speed, and I've sped up the song to stay in sync with the picture.
