Brooklyn, NY - A group of community leaders from Brooklyn got a rare glimpse into the personal life of US Senator Chuck Schumer at a fund raising breakfast Sunday morning in the home of Abe Biderman in Borough Park. Schumer spoke warmly about his heritage and explained how the family name, Schumer, is actually an anglicized version of the Hebrew word Shomer, guardian, as his fathers family guarded the ghetto wall in their European hometown. Schumers paternal grandfather, Jacob, one of eighteen children, came to America in 1890 as a young child and as a teenager, became involved in the labor movement, eventually becoming a union organizer, who ultimately assisted many Jews in upstate New York by organizing those who worked in the paper mills. Schumers maternal grandfather came to America in 1860 and was a builder in Borough Park, in addition to being president of Temple Emanuel in Brooklyn Schumers father, a World War II navigator, flew dangerous supply missions over the Himalayan Mountains and later ran an exterminating business in Bedford-Stuyvestant. Schumer recollected that his parents, who have been married for sixty years, hoped he would pursue a career in law, but his first love was politics and he was elected to the New York State Assembly in Flatbush at age twenty three, the youngest person elected to the legislature since Theodore Roosevelt. Schumer continued his family legacy of being a shomer, by being tough on crime, and in his long career as a public servant ...

A Liverpool startup that makes portable traffic monitoring devices will receive a $200000 grant from the state to help market its product around the country. The state Energy Research and Development Authority has approved the grant for iCone Products LLC, the state said Tuesday. iCone makes what it calls an intelligent traffic cone. It is a traffic barrel equipped with radar and other sensors that monitor traffic congestion and speeds and transmit their information to a data center using cell phones and satellite networks. The company says the devices can be set up in minutes and are a cost-effective way for transportation departments and police to monitor traffic conditions at multiple road construction sites or at special events. Ross Sheckler, the companys managing partner, said the devices will be used to monitor traffic in Pasadena, Calif., during the Rose Bowl Game Jan. 1 and the BCS National Championship Jan. 7. The devices also were used by the California Department of Transportation to monitor the severity of traffic tie-ups on alternative routes when the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge was closed Labor Day weekend for repairs. The Energy Research and Development Authority has assisted Cone Products before. It loaned the company $250000 two years ago, Sheckler said. In April, the company was approved for $300000 in loans from the Onondaga County Industrial Development Agency and affiliates of the Greater Syracuse Chamber of Commerce and the Central New York ...

Senator Darrel J. Aubertine, Chair of the Senate Agriculture Committee, comments on the pending "Farm Worker Fair Labor Practices" bill. Agriculture in New York State directly impacts the daily lives of all New Yorkers, upstate and downstate, supporting hundreds of thousands of jobs and contributing billions to our state economy. As we work toward economic recovery, the New York State Legislature has an obligation to protect farmers and every job associated with agriculture. Yet, even with more than 1500 dairy farms expected to close in the next year because low milk prices do not begin to cover the current cost of production, certain lawmakers, lobbyists and media outlets continue to push for misguided and irresponsible legislation that will put thousands more family farmers out of business and tangle countless others in costly and unnecessary bureaucracy. Despite its name, the Farm Workers Fair Labor Practices Act harms farmer and farm worker alike. To afford new requirements for overtime, benefits that do not apply to most farm workers, and new reporting requirements, farmers will scale back, change their business model to hire more workers at lower pay rates with fewer benefits, or just go out of business. The unique nature of farming and the diversity of farm operations make these one-size-fits-all provisions unworkable. Currently, every four jobs on a dairy farm support five more in the community. Unfortunately, the price paid to farmers for their milk is set by the ...

More than 200000 nannies in New York state have been excluded from labor law's basic rights. 300 domestic workers, students and various supporters asked state senators and assemblypersons to enact Domestic Workers Bill of Rights right now. Albany, NY, April 28, 2009. Hanoami (Kei).
Every day, 200000 domestic workers in New York, mostly women of color, make it possible for others to work. But these nannies, elderly caregivers, and housekeepers are excluded from the most basic labor laws (including the National Labor Relations Act), and isolated with no power or leverage to negotiate. They endure long hours, low wages and sometimes emotional and physical abuse. New York State is considering historic legislation that would provide protections to domestic workers for the first time! The New York Domestic Workers Bill of Rights is the first of its kind nationally and will set a precedent for labor standards for domestic workers around the country Stand with domestic workers by calling Albany legislators to help pass the Domestic Workers Bill of Rights! Call Speaker of the Assembly Sheldon Silver at (518)-455-3791 and Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith at (518)-455-2701 and say: "My name is ______, and I live in ______ New York. I'm calling to urge you to help pass the Domestic Workers Bill of Rights Bill numbers A1470/S2311 this legislative session. Tomorrow, hundreds of domestic workers and their supporters will come to Albany for a day of action and education. Please work with them to move the Domestic Workers Bill of Rights to the floor for a vote." Then find your own representatives and let them know you want them to support the Bill of Rights: assembly.state.ny.us www.senate.state.ny.us In the wake of the economic crisis, the conditions facing ...
AMD-labor deal Sen. Roy McDonald, R-Wilton, is introducing a pro-labor resolution for passage today. It calls for GlobalFoundries, the partnership that includes Advanced Micro Devices and Abu Dhabi investors, to enter into an agreement to help local construction unions to get a piece of the $4.2 billion Malta project to create a computer chip factory. McDonald said because $1.2 billion in public funds — plus resources of local communities — are supporting the foundry, it is a "public works project," meaning prevailing wages (union labor) are necessary. A spokesman for the private company said talks with unions are commencing. McDonald and other legislators have been advocating for unions on the project, as is US Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand. Labor and legislative officials say Bruno — who championed the project for his former district — Gov. George Pataki and company officials assured labor several years ago that a deal would be worked out. But "People at the table then are no longer around," said Ed Malloy, of the New York State Building & Construction Council.
The CUNY Internationalist Clubs present a video of the CUNY contingent in last week's huge city labor march against budget cuts. Includes scenes of the Hunter College walkout that afternoon, as well as from the student occupations at New School and NYU. At the City University of New York, the administration and the state legislature want to raise tuition by $600 per year or more. This is a continuation of the drive to erase the gains of open admissions and purge tens of thousands of poor, racially oppressed, and immigrant students from CUNY. Students must ally with workers in a powerful mobilization to beat back these attacks.

While surfing thru the videos on YouTube, I came across a selection of old films from Lake George, New York. My family vacationed there many times during the 1950s. Lake George is a long narrow lake at the southeast base of the Adirondack Mountains in northern New York State. It's approximately 32 miles long and only about 3 miles wide. It's been a popular tourist spot for decades and celebrity chef Rachel Ray was brought up there. Looking back into my archives, I came up with the only film I made there in the final weekend of the tourist season in 1963. (I don't recall visiting there again after this time.) My father was an avid water skier and loved the cool waters of Lake George. We see him and some family friends as they ski across the lake. Though its hard to tell with the faded film, its a truly beautiful area. Luckily, I also shot some of the downtown area of the village. The area covered is Canada St. and Beach Road. I hope this 8mm film brings back memories to those who visited & enjoyed Lake George, NY. Filmed: August 31, 1963

Many tenants in rent-stabilized apartments whose leases come up for renewal in the year beginning October 1 were hit with minimum rent hikes of $45 or $85 for a one-year or two-year lease renewal. The unprecedented rent hikes were authorized in June by the New York City Rent Guidelines Board, whose members are appointed by the mayor. The rally was sponsored by the Real Rent Reform Campaign, which includes numerous tenant organizations, labor unions, and community organizations. A Latin jazz band sponsored by Local 802, American Federation of Musicians, will perform beginning at 5:00 pm. Speakers at the rally included tenant leaders from Harlem, the Bronx, Brooklyn and Westchester County, whose county rent board also authorized a minimum rent hike this year. Grass roots tenant leaders will be available for interviews before, during and after the rally. Elected officials who spoke included four members of the State Senate Tom Duane, Liz Krueger, Bill Perkins and Andrea Stewart-Cousins who are sponsoring legislation to reform the rent board process in the city and suburban counties; City Council Speaker Christine ...
