This is a animation of the Hudson River landing flight 1549. US Airways Flight 1549 was a scheduled commercial passenger flight from New York City to Charlotte, North Carolina that, on January 15, 2009, was successfully ditched in the Hudson River adjacent to midtown Manhattan six minutes after takeoff from LaGuardia Airport after being disabled by striking a flock of Canada Geese during its initial climb out. The bird strike, which occurred just northeast of the George Washington Bridge about three minutes into the flight, resulted in an immediate and complete loss of thrust from both engines. When the aircrew of the Airbus 320 determined that they would be unable to reliably reach any airfield from the site of the bird strike, they turned it southbound and glided over the Hudson, finally ditching the airliner near the USS Intrepid museum about three minutes after losing power. All 155 occupants safely evacuated the airliner, which was still virtually intact though partially submerged and slowly sinking, and were quickly rescued by nearby watercraft. The entire crew of Flight 1549 was later awarded the Master's Medal of the Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators. The award citation read, "This emergency ditching and evacuation, with the loss of no lives, is a heroic and unique aviation achievement. It has been described as "the most successful ditching in aviation history. The captain was Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger, 57, a former fighter pilot who had been an airline ...

NEW YORK A sightseeing helicopter carrying five Italian tourists and a small plane collided above the Hudson River on Saturday, sending debris into the water and forcing people on New Jersey's waterfront to scamper for cover. Authorities believe all nine people aboard the two aircraft were killed. The accident, which Mayor Michael Bloomberg called "not survivable," happened just after noon and was seen by hundreds and maybe even thousands of people out enjoying a crystal clear summer day. The two aircraft went down just south of the stretch of river where a US Airways jet landed safely seven months ago. But this time, there was no miracle. "This is not going to have a happy ending," Bloomberg said. He said, hours after the accident, that he thought it fair to say "this has changed from a rescue to a recovery mission." Two bodies were recovered in the water, one floating free and one in the wreckage, and other bodies were spotted in the debris, the mayor said. The crash victims included five Italian tourists and a pilot on the helicopter and the three people on the plane, including a child, Bloomberg said. Witnesses described the same scene: a low-flying plane smashing into the helicopter, and then wreckage scattering. The plane's wing was severed by the impact. The plane, a Piper PA-32, had just taken off from Teterboro Airport in New Jersey and was headed to Ocean City, NJ, authorities said. The helicopter was a Eurocopter AS 350 owned by Liberty Tours, a sightseeing and ...

www.baumhedlundlaw.com - Just hours after US Airways Flight 1549 ditched into the Hudson River, Fox Business Channel interviewed Los Angeles aviation attorney and pilot Ronald Goldman, a New York native, for his comments. The Airbus 320 aircraft took off from La Guardia Airport in New York City at 3:26 pm. Moments later the plane struck a flock of birds which disabled both engines causing an emergency landing situation which subsequently led the pilot to do what is called ditching into the Hudson River. Rescue efforts went into effect soon after while the crew of flight 1549 began to evacuate the aircraft. All 155 people survived the incident. Mr. Goldman comments on the distinction of the pilot and crew in their incredible efforts to perform the emergency procedures calmly and effectively. Although reports of some passengers experiencing hypothermia were rushed to local hospitals, no life-threatening injuries have been reported.
