www.nature.org Lake Martin is a bald cypress - tupelo swamp and bottomland hardwood forest habitat, of which 9500 acres are protected and maintained by the Nature Conservancy. The swamp is located within the Cypress Island Preserve, in Saint Martin Parish, between Breaux Bridge and Lafayette in Southwest Louisiana. The spectacular wading bird rookery supports thousands of nesting birds each spring. Shown in this video clip include nesting and fledgling little blue herons (juveniles are white), roseate spoonbills, great egrets; and a black-crowned night heron. Lake Martin, a man made lake on the Tallapoosa River, has over 700 miles of shoreline. When it was formed in the 1920's, it was very briefly the largest man-made body of water in the world. This record was soon beat out by a lake in Russia, though. Lake Martin is well known as one of the cleanest lakes in the country....
