Ludwik Sempoliński -- Lambeth Walk (N.Gay /A.Włast), Muza ca 1960 (Polish) NOTE: Ludwik SEMPOLIŃSKI (b. in Warsaw 1898 -- d. in Warsaw 1981) -- one of the most popular and most characteristic Polish comedian actors, a perfect impersonator of a scenic type of a "grand seigneur". In the interwar period, he had engagements in the first division of little stages in Warsaw: Qui pro Quo, Morskie Oko, Ali Baba, Wesoły Wieczór. He willingly performed in operettas, alas, he was rather reluctant to make recordings. All what's been left from his repertoire in originals are two accousticals from 1927-28 made for Syrena Grand Record with hits: "Rafałek, jeszcze kawałek" (Rafal, one more little piece, please!) and duett with Zula Pogorzelska in the foxtrot "Cała przyjemność po mojej stronie" (The Whole Pleasure Is Mine). In 1931 he also recorded for Syrena-Electro his trade-mark evergreen "Tomasz, ach skąd ty to masz!" (Where You Got It From, Thomas?!) and a less well known foxtrott "Ja się nie mogę zdecydować" (I Can't Make Up My Mind). In the last weeks of summer 1939, shortly before outbreak of WW2 he and the group of best Warsaw actors established a new cabaret "Ali Baba". The key number in their opening program for the autumn season of 1939, was supposed to be Sempoliński's song entitled "Ten wąsik ach ten wąsik" (This moustache, oh, this moustache!). In Charlie Chaplin's guise and to the tune of "Titine, ah Titine" Sempoliński in a merciless caricature was depicting Adolf Hitler ...

It became an instant classic and the dance an international hype. In French it was usually called "Le Lambeth Walk" and in Germany "Lambert's Nachtlokal" (Lambert's Nightclub, where it became extremely popular - much to the dismay of censors. Karel Reisz's We Are the Lambeth Boys (1959) has much in common with Lindsay Anderson's Every Day Except Christmas (1957). It was produced by Leon Clore, sponsored by Ford for its Look at Britain series, filmed by the usual Free Cinema technical staff - in particular cinematographer Walter Lassally and editor John Fletcher - and delivered in the same 50-minute format. The film once again took a sympathetic approach to an aspect of working-class life largely neglected by commercial British cinema. After Every Day's dignified depiction of market workers in Covent Garden, Lambeth Boys attempted to deliver a positive portrait of the lives of ordinary teenagers, far from the usual violent 'Teddy Boy' stereotype. In a sense, the film also developed the theme initiated by Reisz and Tony Richardson in Momma Don't Allow three years earlier. Lambeth Boys was shot over six weeks in the summer of 1958 in and around the Alford House, a youth club in the Oval area of South London. It follows a group of teenagers at work, at home and in their leisure time, giving them space to express their frustrations and aspirations.. The film is never so good as when it lets the camera move around the group or capture their faces in close-up, rather than providing facts and figures or a sociological analysis. In a famous article on the film in Sight and Sound, sociologist Richard Hoggart talked of it as a 'film essay' rather than a documentary, because, as he claimed, "it sets out to show, not the ...

"The Road to Copenhagen" Q&A session with the Climate Change Secretary, Ed Miliband MP, on Monday 30 November 2009. Several hundred people attended a Q&A session last night hosted by Labour's Parliamentary Candidate's Chuka Umunna. If elected, Chuka will be the first MP for Streatham to be who grew up in the area. TTB is thrilled that he clearly aspires to work towards helping us solve our deepening environmental crises. Lambeth Town Hall was filled to capacity with local residents and several groups of second form students who participated in a Q&A session on one of the last days before Ed Miliband's departure for Copenhagen. Both Chuka Umunna and Ed Miliband made a case to move swiftly towards a strong deal in Copenhagen. Unfortunately, Ed Miliband failed to answer the questions that desperately needed addressing. Global networks of environmental grassroots activists are organizing in preparation for the fact that we have very little faith in an upcoming deal in Copenhagen. The Copenhagen agreement will not solve our problems because: 1. The climate crisis shows that its impossible to have infinite growth on a finite planet. The Sustainable Development Commission's report 'Prosperity without Growth' describes how 'perpetual economic growth is totally at odds with our scientific knowledge about the finite resource base and the fragile ecology on which we depend for survival'. The negotiations at Copenhagen do not address this dilemma. 2. The climate talks are put ...
On Saturday 31st October, the Mayor of Lambeth took part in a B£ shopping spree, that started off at Morleys of Brixton department store where the Mayor got himself some B£s. Next on the list was A&C Continental, Portuguese deli on Atlantic Road, from which the Mayor emerged with a bag of goodies, including herbs and onions for his dinner. From there the Mayoral convoy, made up of a number of B£ supporters and onlookers, moved to the Arcades market for a stop at Wa Zo Bia, African food store, to buy some chilies, and then across to Secondo, vintage clothes outlet, where the Mayor picked up a very cool jersey. From there, and with many hello-stops at regular intervals, the Mayor reached Nubian Natural Body Care, on Atlantic Road, where B£s came handy in the purchase of some scrumptious salt crystals. Next it was Diverse Gifts, on Atlantic Road, and finally over to Stuart the Watchmaker, on Pope Road, before the Mayor said good bye to the team and headed off to his next engagement. No doubt those bath salts would have come handy that evening. The shopping spree was a fantastic success in promoting participating businesses and the B£, with passers-by and shoppers out and about in Brixton.
Excellent comments about Nick Griffin's appearance BBC Question Time from a representative of Lambeth TUC, who says "Hitler didn't come to power saying he was going to gas 6 million Jews, Socialists and Trades Unionists, he did exactly what Nick Griffin's done, he made himself look respectable". These comments are followed by an interview with a young school student who discusses the racism and sexism of BNP beliefs, and who says she'll be refusing a work placement with the BBC. Two great artists: Eddie Cantor, American actor and Bert Ambrose, British bandleader are performing here in one of the musical icons of the interwar period, "The Lambeth Walk". It is a song from the 1937 musical Me and My Girl (with book and lyrics by Douglas Furber and L. Arthur Rose and music by Noel Gay) and it takes its name from a local street once notable for its street market and working class culture in Lambeth (an area of London, England). The story line of the original show concerns a Cockney barrow boy who inherits an earldom but almost loses his Lambeth girlfriend. The choreography from the musical, in which the song was a show-stopping Cockney-inspired extravaganza, inspired a popular walking dance, done in a jaunty strutting style. The craze reached Buckingham Palace, with King George and Queen Elizabeth attending a performance and joining in the shouted "Oi" which ends the chorus. The fad reached the United States in 1938, popularized by Boston-based orchestra-leader Joseph (Joe) Rines, among others. Rines and his band frequently performed in New York, and the dance became especially popular at the "better" night clubs. As with most dance crazes, other well-known orchestras did versions of the song, including Duke Ellington in America or Django Reinhardt & Stephane Grappelly in France. A member of the Nazi Party achieved attention in 1939 by declaring the"Lambeth Walk" (which was, almost clandestinely becoming popular in Berlin, under the altered title "In ...

The Archbishop of Canterbury saved the big news to the end of his press conference at the conclusion of the Lambeth Conference in Canterbury on August 3, 2008. Here he states he cannot accept that full inclusion of gays and lesbians in all rites and order of the church is a human right, as well as clarifying his views on the so-called "prophetic actions" taken by the Episcopal Church as the cause of the crisis in the Anglican Communion. The question remains unanswered - what will he do about it?

The complete film of 'We Are the Lambeth Boys' is available to buy on the BFI DVD 'Free Cinema' - filmstore.bfi.org.uk "A good evening for young people is much the same as it has always been", the voiceover informs us, attempting to get audiences to think back to their own youth before judging the teenager of the day. Karel Reisz's fantastic film was shot over six months at a "not typical" youth club (ie actually very good) in Lambeth. The biggest change from today would almost certainly be that nearly all of these teens work for a living, making evenings with friends the only time in which they can express themselves. Dressed in suits and ties, or best dresses, they seem somehow to be simultaneously older and younger than their years. Watch as the camera fixes on faces as they observe each other, ultimately making the voiceover unnecessary. Hans Rehmstedt mit s. Tanzorch., Refrainges. Rudi Dreyer - In Lambert's Nachtlokal (The Lambeth Walk), Electrola 1938 Hans Rehmstedt' orchestra was one of those great German dance bands, who never gave up their heroic attempts to play swing in Berlin in the end of 1930s., when the plaques with the gothic-letter warning: „Swing tanzen verboten!" were hanging in front of the gateways to many dance halls and clubs. This is why the „Lambeth Walk" - great European hit of 1938, has been recorded under the German pseudonim „In Lambert's Nachtlokal" - to hide it from the all-seeing eyes of the Nazi-Reichskulturkammer cenzors. "The Lambeth Walk" is a song from the 1937 musical Me and My Girl (with book and lyrics by Douglas Furber and L. Arthur Rose and music by Noel Gay). The song takes its name from an unremarkable street[1] in Lambeth, an area of London, England.
