Land Rover Discovery v Toyota Land Cruiser - which is the ultimate off-roader? Full story, pictures and more videos at www.autocar.co.uk
Workhorse, tow car, law enforcer, status symbol, people carrier, mud plugger; few cars can claim to fulfil any of these duties with genuine conviction. Yet since 16 November 1989 20 years ago today one car has consistently met all those challenges and more, earning itself iconic status as the ultimate all-purpose vehicle. That car is the Land Rover Discovery. Designed originally to plug the gap between the utilitarian attributes of the iconic Land Rover Defender and the more luxurious characteristics of the flagship Range Rover, Discovery soon became the perfect niche vehicle for the growing demands of the family 4x4 market. "The Discovery legend has been built on innovative design and advanced technology. From the introduction of high-efficiency direct-injection diesel technology into the 4x4 market in 1989, to pioneering occupant safety with the adoption of twin airbags in 1998, Discovery has led the way." says Phil Popham, Managing Director. "It is truly the best loved SUV the world over. Today, we sell the Discovery in 91 countries and sales to date have hit over and above 900000," he adds. Having revolutionised the mid-sized 4x4 sector in 1989, its no surprise that the Discovery evolved to reflect the needs and tastes of its increasingly urbane and discerning buyers. By 1994 range-topping Discovery models featured leather upholstery and wood veneer trim, and when the Series II Discovery was introduced in 1998 it added a sophisticated new heating, air-conditioning and ...
Range Rover Sport + Land Rover Discovery 3 / LR3 at Moegatle (extreme hill climb) 45 degrees incline klipdrift
The fourth generation Discovery 4 was launched in 2009, and went on sale in the United Kingdom on 1 September. Compared with the 2.7 litre TDV6 engine, which continues to be offered on the Discovery 4, the new TDV6 3.0 litre twin turbo diesel engine delivers a 9% fuel economy improvement (EU combined cycle) and 10% lower CO2 emissions, at the same time as increasing power by 28% to 241 bhp (180 kw); torque increases 36% to 600 N·m (440 lb·ft). The results include a 060 mph time of 9.0 seconds, (0100 km/h in 9.6 seconds), a 24% improvement over the 2.7 litre model. The new engine has been optimised for low-end torque as well as economy, making it possible to activate the lock-up clutch of the ZF HP-28 automatic transmission at lower speed. This reduces 'slip' in the hydraulic torque converter improving both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The higher torque at lower engine speeds also enables longer gearing for more economical cruising. Land Rover's engineers have also transformed the on-road ride, handling and off-road capabilities. The changes include new suspension components, revised steering, larger brakes, improved traction control, and enhancements to the Terrain Response system, which helps optimise the vehicle for different on-road or off-road driving situations. The exterior design of the Land Rover Discovery 4 has been updated, most obviously with smoother and simpler surfaces at the front, including a new, more aerodynamic bumper. Aerodynamic changes to the ...

MORE 2009 NYIAS @ INSIDELINE.COM: www.edmunds.com The revised 2010 Land Rover LR4 continues in the lr3's footsteps as the most versatile Land Rover. The functional and spacious interior gets a clean new design, and under the hood, the hefty LR4 gets a 25 percent horsepower boost thanks to a new V8. The extra grunt, combined with some new electronic tech, eases towing chores, and the LR4 should maintain the marque's lofty off-road reputation. Fresh from its launch in the 2010 Jaguars, a direct-injection 5.0-liter V8 motivates the US-bound LR4 with 375 hp and 375 pound-feet of torque). For all-terrain duty in the Land Rover, the Jag V8 has been modified with a deep oil sump, unique intake manifolds and waterproof drive accessories (starter, alternator, air-conditioner, etc.). The V8 will be paired with a revised six-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. Sadly, the new 3.0 TDI V6 introduced in the Euro-market LR4 will not be headed Stateside. This new diesel knocks out 443 lb-ft of torque while exceeding 30 mpg on the British test cycle thanks to a crafty dual-mode setup for the twin turbos, which can work either sequentially or in parallel. We'd probably hate having all that torque, combined with decent fuel mileage. Compared to the LR3, the LR4 is meant to emphasize superior on-road dynamics, and a stiffer front antiroll bar is teamed with new suspension geometry to quicken steering response and reduce body roll. A new, variable-ratio power steering setup aims ...

Land Rover created the Range Rover Sport for socially mobile off-road fanatics who find the big Range Rover a bit too reserved. The Range Rover Sports shortened wheelbase trades interior space for better handling and improved stability, but make no mistake, the Sport nametag does not mean off-road ability takes a backseat to performance. Designed to do battle with the likes of the BMW X5, Porsche Cayenne and Infiniti FX, the Range Rover Sport more than holds its own in the high-end luxury arena and bests most of its competitors with unparalleled off-road abilities. Land Rover has revealed an exciting vision of its future with the LRX concept at the Detroit Motor Show. The three-door LRX is more compact, lighter and features sustainable technology. It addresses the needs of a changing world and offers the potential of 120 g/km CO2 emissions. Shorter than the Freelander 2 / LR2 and 205 mm (8.1 in) lower, the LRX is conceived as using a 2.0-litre, turbodiesel hybrid, capable of running on bio-diesel. Combined with other technologies, this powertrain could reduce fuel consumption by as much as 30% compared with other comparable 4x4s. The concept's integrated Electric Rear Axle Drive (ERAD) would allow LRX to use electric drive alone at lower speeds while retaining full and even improved 4x4 ability in tough conditions. The Integrated Starter-Generator (ISG) function would stop the engine automatically when the vehicle halts in traffic, so the engine does not idle needlessly, and restart it quickly and smoothly as required. LRX also incorporates Land Rover's acclaimed Terrain Response system, which optimises vehicle drivability and comfort, as well as maximising traction. On LRX, this includes a new and efficiency-focused 'Eco' mode. lrx's novel design approaches would further improve efficiencies by reducing vehicle weight. These include exposed seat structures, roof and instrument panel as well as replacing the glass for the side windows and roof with SABIC Innovative Plastics polycarbonate, which is around 40% lighter. The ...
Land Rover is straying from its traditional SUV models with plans to unveil a new crossover vehicle, LRX concept, at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit. The three-door vehicle, Land Rover indicates, is a cross coupé. The car is more compact, lighter in weight and thereby more fuel-efficient than other Land Rovers.

Land Rover - From LRO.com: Land Rover pioneer William Phillips Birch shot this film clip (see below) at Rome Farm, West Yorkshire, in 1960. This video demonstrates that big suvs are not necessarily the safest vehicles out there, new technologies and better designs put the Renault in a better place where the driver was not compromised.
