On May 13th, 2009, Bill Handel and co-host Lara Hermanson of KFI 640 AM made racist and grossly offensive statements about Armenians, going so far as to suggest, "What the Turks started, Bill will finish." Following weeks of pressure, a formal apology was issued both on video and on the air (this one, from June 12, 2009). In addition, Lara Hermanson has agreed to do community service with an Armenian organization.

Bill Handel & Lara Hermanson apologize for their statements against the Armenians. Representatives from the Unified Young Armenians, ANC-WR, AYF and ANC- Glendale had a meeting on June 11, 2009 with KFI Radio which led to a favorable outcome for the Armenian community.. Shortly after, this vl-log was released. The efforts of the community, activists and organizations have prevailed.
