(c)1967 on album "San Francisco" John Phillips from The Mamas And The Papas wrote this as the unofficial anthem for the Monterey Pop Festival, which is near San Francisco. Phillips helped organize the festival. Phillips played guitar on this track and produced it with Lou Adler. The session musicians who played on it were top notch: Joe Osborne on bass, Hal Blaine on drums and Larry Knechtel on keyboards. They were members of "The Wrecking Crew," who played on many of Phil Spector's productions. McKenzie was in a group called The Journeymen with John Phillips. His only other hit was the follow up to this "Like An Old Time Movie," and by the end of the '60s he'd gone to live in the desert. In the late '80s he co-wrote the Beach Boys #1 single "Kokomo." This was one of the big Hippie hits during the Summer Of Love in 1967. Many peace activists and Folkies wore flowers in their hair. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ If you are going to San Francisco, be sure to wear some flowers in your hair If you are going to San Francisco, you're gonna meet some gentle people there For those who come to San Francisco, summertime will be a love-in there In the streets of San Francisco gentle people with flowers in their hair All across the nation, such a strange vibration people in motion There's a whole generation with a new explanation People in motion, people in motion For those who come to San Francisco, be sure to wear some flowers in your hair If you come ...
I love Bread! Who doesn't? Hopefully, we're all thinking about the band and not the food group. (DUH DUM) I had to mention it. No good segues for that! Anyhoo, owning The Anthology of Bread is a MUST for all music lovers that appreciate the music of the 70's. Most of their hits came between 1970-1973. The music of Bread is one of a few sources that always floods me with nostalgia for an innocent period of time, though, I was known as a tyrannical child, full of mischief and deviant behavior. I guess that that's far from innocent ;) For some reason, I have little recollection for that behavior ... well, maybe a couple of instances ... My relatives "claim" to have their individual "Erwin stories" that make them scratch their heads and wonder how I actually turned out to be a decent person ... well, so, I think I turned out okay ... Ahem. Reminiscing may give my victims a chuckle now, but I'm sure that they had other intentions when my dark side was let loose upon the earth in the 70's! BUT, in spite of those somewhat, less glorious, memories, I wasn't all bad. The feelings of "nostalgia for an innocent period of time" that I had mentioned earlier always revolves around my family, especially mom. My sister is almost nine years my junior, so I was an only child for almost nine years. Maybe that's why I was such a spoiled brat, or maybe I should say, I was more of a spoiled brat, than I am today. When my sister became a part of our family, I turned over a new leaf and became a ...

Bread was a late 60s/70s rock/pop band from Los Angeles, California. They were one of the most popular rock groups of the early 1970s, a primary example of what later was labeled "soft rock", releasing a string of well-crafted, melodic soft rock singles. The band consisted of David Gates, Jimmy Griffin, Robb Royer, Mike Botts, and Larry Knechtel. Gates, Griffin, and Royer joined together in 1968 and signed with Elektra Records choosing the name Bread in 1969. Gates and Griffin had both worked with Royer's previous band, The Pleasure Fair. Bread's first single, "Dismal Day", was released in June 1969 but did not chart. Their debut album, Bread, was released in September 1969 and peaked at #127 on the Billboard 200. Songwriting on the album was split evenly between Gates and the team of Griffin-Royer. Jim Gordon, a top session player, accompanied the band on drums for the album. Bread became a quartet with their second album, On the Waters (peaking at #12 on the Billboard 200), bringing in Botts as drummer. This time their efforts quickly established Bread as a major act, hitting the mainstream with the Billboard Hot 100 #1 hit "Make It with You" in 1970. "Make It With You" would be Bread's only number one hit on the Hot 100. For their next single, they released a re-recorded version of "It Don't Matter to Me", a Gates song from their first album. This single was a hit as well, reaching #10. Bread began touring and recording the 1971 album titled Manna (#21), which included ...

For eg "Mansions" was written about M&Ps luxury life, "Too Late" was wriiten to show the end of the group, etc. Larry Knechtel left a beautiful work on piano on this album, "Gemini Childe" sounds really great, with a piano part at the end.
