Leprosy has no followers yet. Be the first one to follow.
Leprosy is a bacterial disease that has been around for over 4.000 years and is one many would have assumed ought to have been eradicated by now. But millions of leprosy patients around the world live with an illness which often sparks fear and misunderstanding. Indonesia has the third highest number of sufferers in the world after India and Brazil and here thousands still live in shame, secrecy and isolation. Now the government with the help of the military is trying to educate, diagnose and eradicate the scourge -- an effort that has come a little too late for some. Al Jazeera's Step Vaessen reports from West Sumatra.

Forugh Farrokhzād (Persian: فروغ فرخزاد) January 5, 1935, Tehran, Iran -- February 13, 1967) was an Iranian poet and film director. Forugh Farrokhzad is arguably one of Iran's most influential female poets of the twentieth century. She was a controversial modernist poet and an iconoclast. Forugh was born in Tehran to career military officer Colonel Mohammad Bagher Farrokhzad and his wife Touran Vaziri-Tabar in 1935. The third of seven children (Amir, Massoud, Mehrdad, Fereydoun , Pouran, Gloria), she attended school until the ninth grade, then was taught painting and sewing at a girl's school for the manual arts. In 1958 she spent nine months in Europe and met filmmaker and writer Ebrahim Golestan, who reinforced her own inclinations to express herself and live independently. She traveled to Tabriz and made a film about Iranians affected by leprosy. The 1962 documentary film titled "The House is Black" won several international awards. During the twelve days of shooting, she became attached to Hossein Mansouri, the child of two lepers. She adopted the boy and brought him to live at her mother's house. Hossein Mansouri tells about his life with Forugh in this documentary. Directed by Claus Strigel.

You might think that leprosy is a disease of the past, but millions across the world still suffer the body wasting disease. New treatments offer hope but there are fears it could make a comeback, particularly in poverty stricken countries in Africa and Asia. This week, on Reporter, euronews has travelled to Mali to take a look at efforts to combat the disease.... www.euronews.net
በተለምዶ የቆማጦች ሠፈር Leprosy or Hansen's disease (HD), is a chronic disease caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium leprae and Mycobacterium lepromatosis. Named after physician Gerhard Armauer Hansen, Leprosy is primarily a granulomatous disease of the peripheral nerves and mucosa of the upper respiratory tract; skin lesions are the primary external sign. Left untreated, leprosy can be progressive, causing permanent damage to the skin, nerves, limbs and eyes. Contrary to folklore, leprosy does not cause body parts to fall off, although they can become numb and/or diseased as a result of infection. Although the mode of transmission of Hansen's disease remains uncertain, most investigators think that M. leprae is usually spread from person to person in respiratory droplets.[6] The minimum incubation period reported is as short as a few weeks and this is based on the very occasional occurrence of leprosy among young infants. The maximum incubation period reported is as long as 30 years, or over, as observed among war veterans known to have been exposed for short periods in endemic areas but otherwise living in non-endemic areas. It is generally agreed that the average incubation period is between three and five years. Leprosy is now known to be neither sexually transmitted nor highly infectious after treatment. Approximately 95% of people are naturally immune and sufferers are no longer infectious after as little as 2 weeks of treatment. Leprosy has affected humanity ...
Since the 1930s, leprosy patients in Egypt have been rounded up and placed in the town of Abu Zaabal. The Egyptian government has now offered the inhabitants the right to return to their villages and cities. But many have refused, preferring to live and work away from the social stigma that often comes with their disease. Al Jazeera's Ayman Mohyeldin reports from Abu Zaabal, one of the world's last leprosy colonies. [September 08, 2010]

Hundreds of thousands of people still contract leprosy each year and millions more suffer from its terrible consequences. American Leprosy Missions is the oldest and largest non-profit in the US dedicated to touching, treating and transforming the lives of people affected by leprosy and related diseases like Buruli ulcer. Founded by Christian missionaries in 1906, ALM operates in 15 countries worldwide, restoring lives broken by disease, disability and despair in Jesus' name.
In 2005, India achieved it's goal of elimination of leprosy, meaning reducing the number of cases to less than 1/10000 of population. Maharashtra was one of the 7 states to be the first to achieve this goal. However, new cases continue to come in light. And several cases, as this video shows, go unregistered. Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae which mainly affects the skin, peripheral nerves, upper respiratory tract and the eyes. It is curable and treatment provided in the early stages averts disability. Currently India has a special plan to tackle leprosy called National Leprosy Eradication Programme, NLEP. Under NLEP all leprosy patients are entitled to free healthcare facilities including Multi Drug Therapy. Apart from that state government of Maharashtra also has several special facilities for the leprosy patients. The state has 42 Leprosy Control units spread all across the state where leprosy patients can get free treatment. Apart from that, they can avail several other benefits which include; 35 kg of rice and wheat at Rs. 2 and Rs. 3 respectively every month. Housing facility under schemes like Valmiki Ambedkar Awas Yojana, Priority employments to leprosy affected persons and their dependants Leprosy affected people are also entitled to travel concessions However, Rohini Power reports, there are about 25 people in a single village like Walhe who neither gets benefits of any government scheme, nor help from any other sources ...

A colorful sea of umbrellas covered St. Peters Square as pilgrims gathered under the pelting rain to listen to the pope recite the Angelus prayer. This week two children from the religious movement Catholic Action of Rome, accompanied the pope from his window while he reflected on St. Pauls Hymn of Charity. Benedict XVI Charity is the greatest gift, which gives value to all the others. Pope Benedict XVI said charity is what distinguishes a Christian and added that love is the essence of God himself and the light that gives goodness and beauty of every human existence. Benedict XVI At the same time love is, so to say, the style of God and of believers, it is the behaviour of those who, responding to the love of God, order their lives as a gift of self to God and to neighbor. On the second annual Day of Prayer and Peace for the Holy Land Pope Benedict XVI said he was spiritually united in prayer with Christians all around the globe and released two doves as a symbol of peace and hope to the world, but it took some extra effort. Ecco papa He also recognized World Day of Leprosy by greeting advocates for leprosy victims and praying for those who suffer from the disease. MC CTV
By taking a look at Felicitas bright smile, you would never know the darkness of her recent past. When she was 10 years old the young girl from Kenya was diagnosed with leprosy. Felicita says some of her family members abandoned her while she struggled with the nightmare of the disease. But now telling her story is a dream come true. Thousands of people all around the globe are fighting leprosy today. On World Leprosy Day people like Flavio Cimini from The Italian Association of friends of Raoul Follereau, or AIFO, aim to raise money and raise public awareness. Flavio Cimini AIFO We are also using this day to fight the disease of indifference, the disease of selfishness thats embedded mostly in rich countries the nations where we live. Leprosy, a disease caused by bacteria known to cause damage to the skin, nerves and limbs, is on the decline. According to World Health Organization the number of new cases of leprosy decreased by nearly 50 percent since 2002 mainly due to the effectiveness of multi-drug therapies. Still the number of new cases in India and Brazil are startling. Combined, they registered more than 172 thousand new cases in 2008. Flavio Cimini AIFO Leprosy is a disease that still exists especially in developing countries, its a illness that many people forget about but affects thousands. In 1954, Raoul Follereau established World Leprosy Day he is the person who inspired AIFO. He was a journalist who much like Father Damian, dedicated his life to the fight ...

This is the VOA Special English Health Report, from voaspecialenglish.com Pope Benedict named five new saints in October, including a Catholic clergyman who cared for people in a leper colony. Father Damien was born Joseph De Veuster in Belgium. In eighteen seventy-three he went to the Hawaiian island of Molokai. After several years of working in the colony, he himself developed leprosy. Father Damien died in eighteen eighty-nine. He was forty-nine years old. Leprosy -- also called Hansen's disease -- is a bacterial disease that causes skin wounds and nerve damage. The disease can severely disfigure victims and cause death. Untreated patients can spread the bacteria from their nose and mouth through the air to people who are near them a lot. But doctors have been able to treat leprosy since the nineteen forties. Today they use a combination of three drugs. Experts say after the first treatment, patients can no longer infect others. At the start of this year there were two hundred thirteen thousand cases of leprosy reported in one hundred twenty-one countries. The World Health Organization says there were almost two hundred fifty thousand new cases last year. But the drug combination can cure the disease within six to twelve months. The number of new cases has been falling in many countries. But there are places where leprosy is still spreading quickly. These include areas of Angola, Brazil, Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo and India. Other areas ...
www.abroaderview.org .Volunteer Abroad India Health Care & HIV - Leprosy Colony Programs Medical and Nurses In a country like India where poverty, illiteracy, and poor public health awareness are rife, the spread of HIV presents a daunting challenge. Our healthcare programs welcome medical professionals and medical students. Community clinics and small hospitals are in desperate need of additional financial assistance, medical resources, most importantly, caring and motivated human support. Volunteers with previous knowledge and experience in this area help improve the medical services delivered to patients. Volunteers without hands on clinic medical experience (Pre-Medical Students) also restore patients' energy and inspiration by leading creative recreational activities and providing much needed care, attention, and support.
