Criminal Court Judge Richard Baumgartner stacked 100 years to convicted killer Letalvis Cobbins' life without parole sentence in the murders and carjacking of Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom.
KNOXVILLE (AP) — A jury that convicted George Thomas of murder in the torture slayings of a young Knoxville couple sentenced him Thursday to life in prison with no parole. The jury, brought in from Hamilton County to hear the case, heard testimony from Thomas and victims' families and deliberated for only about two hours before returning its sentence. Thomas, of Lebanon, Ky., was convicted Tuesday, becoming the third defendant convicted in the carjacking and torture murders of 21-year-old Channon Christian and 23-year-old Christopher Newsom. In earlier trials, ringleader Lemaricus Davidson was sentenced to death and his brother Letalvis Cobbins, was sentenced to life without parole. Eric Boyd was convicted of being an accessory and was sentenced to 18 years in prison. Newsom's naked, bound and burned body was found near railroad tracks and Christian had been stuffed into a trash can and left to suffocate. Assistant District Attorney Takisha Fitzgerald told the jury in her opening statement that the crime centered on Christian's sport utility vehicle and the desire of Thomas and his friends to ride in it. Dillard said Thomas knew the others were going to steal a car, but "didn't know they were going to steal the people in the car."

The gates of Tennessee's only death row prison opened wide for Lemaricus Davidson tonight, hours after a Knox County jury sentenced him to die for his role as the ringleader in the January 2007 carjacking, torture and killings of Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom. Davidson arrived at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution's Unit 2 in Nashville around 6 pm local time, said Dorinda Carter, spokeswoman for the Tennessee Department of Correction. He'll spend 23 hours per day alone in his cell every day, with just one hour of daylight in a caged yard.

The prosecution's expert witness testified DNA from fluid samples taken from Cobbins matched those found on Channon Christian's clothes and body as well as the fabric used to bind her. Hugh Newsom talked about what he thinks of Cobbins. "I think he's a murderer as the law is written. He may not have been the trigger person that killed Chris, but I suspect he helped put Channon in that waste can."
Between crying and yelling, Letalvis Cobbins was heard on tape Wednesday first telling investigators he had nothing to do with the carjacking, rapes and murders of Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom in 2007.
