One year ago, Abdel Baset al-Megrahi, the Lockerbie bomber, was released from a Scottish prison. His return to Libya was met with cheers; although his plot killed 270 people, of those, 189 were Americans, and 38 were from New Jersey. The release is highly opposed in the US
Gaddafi's been around a long time. Former Libyan Intelligence official and Head of libya's airline secuity Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi was found guilty and served 8 years in jail for his alleged part in the crime. Libya's Colonel Gadaffi sent his own son to welcome Al Megrahi from UK custody, announcing that Britain had struck economic deals over Libya's oil.

Now he's being sent home to Libya on compassionate grounds, because he's dying of cancer. Scottish justice minister Kenny MacAskill made the announcement, but said he knew the decision would draw criticism. He is going to die." Earlier, Megrahi was escorted from Greenock Prison in western Scotland to Glasgow Airport where he left UK soil for the last time. Megrahi is the only person to have been convicted of Britain's deadliest terror attack. 243 passengers and 16 crew were killed, the majority Americans.
