This is a short video of a helicopter dropping fire retardant on the Lockheed Fire in the Bonny Doon area a few miles North of Santa Cruz, California. I was driving back from the Greyhound Rock fishing access area along Highway 1 when I saw the copter and pulled over.
The other helicopter that is not pictured in The Line up of Helicopters at Lockheed Fire described in the www.jonyoung.wordpress.com blog entry is shown with another helicopter. All shot on August 15 in the evening on the way to the barn dance.

Two helicopters, first one, and then the other, fill their containers by hovering over Waddell Creek, lowering, dropping container into water, filling, then fly off to the east over the ridge and out of sight. They are battling the Lockheed Fire on August 14, 2009 in the evening around 6 pm.

Was on Hwy 1 and came into this action just off the roadway. Several helicopters dipping for water, then rushing off to the hillside.
I've decided to stay and protect the house if something happens!

doubled in size within 24 hours and officials declared a state of emergency ahead of a visit by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger today. Bob Davis, who lives on Country Estates Drive, said that he found this charred leaf in his neighbor's driveway and said that it's burning debris like this that concerns him. 'It only takes something like this falling in the right place to start another fire,' he said. the wildfire is now the county's largest in at least 20 years, surpassing the May 2008 Summit Fire that destroyed 63 homes and spread 4270 acres. With the aid of six helicopters and six air tankers, Cal Fire said 1500 firefighters have contained 15 percent of the Lockheed Fire, up from the 5 percent reported Friday morning. However, by Friday evening, the blaze had grown to 5036 acres, up from the 2800 acres reported Thursday. This was taken at the top of Jarvis Road, on the other side of Hiway 17, from my upstairs bedroom window. It was taken today around 4:30pm. It was quiet when I went outside, no birds, no sounds, but now I realize i have been hearing the planes and helicopters intermittently throughout the day. It is quite a distance from my house, and I am not worried. I do have good exit plans...if I can smell smoke...I am outa here! That's the plan!

The danger is not over but for now the fire fighters are gaining ground in West Kelowna (also know as Westbank). Downtown Westbank is open for business and now it is a slow waiting game to see if the winds come up or not, if not residents should be back home soon. Operation Credible Sport was a United States military aircraft modification plan in late 1980 to prepare for a second rescue attempt of the hostages held in Iran using C-130 cargo planes modified with rocket engines. Its followup project in 1981-82, Credible Sport II, used one of the original aircraft as the YMC-130 prototype for the MC-130H Combat Talon II. The Credible Sport program was a developmental project to create capabilites for a "Super STOL" aircraft to use in rescuing the hostages after the dramatic failure of Operation Eagle Claw. Eagle Claw failed when a Sea Stallion helicopter crashed into a parked C-130 Hercules in the Iranian desert, killing 8 servicemen. Credible Sport was abandoned as unnecessary after the election of Ronald Reagan as President in November, 1980. The program was developed to be a quick strike, simplified plan when overall plans and military exercises developed for Project Honey Badger to implement a second rescue attempt grew to involve over a hundred primary aircraft and large numbers of ground troops. The Credible Sport concept called for modified C-130 Hercules cargo planes to land in the Amjadien (soccer) Stadium across the street from the American Embassy in Tehran and airlift out the rescued hostages. The aircraft would then be flown to and landed on an aircraft carrier for immediate medical treatment of injured hostages. Three MC-130 Combat Talon crews (all Eagle Claw veterans) were assigned to fly the three aircraft drawn from ...
This video is of several Lockheed P2V Neptunes operated by Neptune Aerial Services of Montana. These aircraft are being operated out of San Bernardino Airport in California on 13 Nov., 2008 while fighting our very large wildfires at that time. They did a great job! Listen to the music that those big Wright 18-cylinder R-3350 radials make--------sweet! Sorry, no inflight footage because they halted operations before I could get any.
