Enjoy the video but may I offer a brief lesson? Americans! Learn! You are supposed to climb onstage and give money to Lokassa ya Mbongo! That's what his name actually MEANS! In Africa (where people have a lot less money) everybody does it. You should do it too. What a disgrace that the wealthy Upper West Side audience at Lincoln Center in New York Cityt did not know this. It's fun to do, and means a lot to the musicians. Don't worry: Just do it!! when there is a 'break' and the rhythm guitarist plays (while the bassist does not), your job is to climb right up there on the stage and stuff money in his clothes: That's what you are supposed to do as a good audience! And now...enjoy Samba Mapangala and Orchestra Virunga with Lokassa ya Mbongo on rhythm guitar, Johnny Bash on solo, and Ngouma Lokito on bass! Somebody tell me the names of the drummer and keyboardist and I'll give them a shout-out too!!
One of Congo's greatest songsters of soukous brought Africa to Lincoln Center's Midsummer Night's Swing. Samba Mapangala was joined onstage by Congolese rhythm guitar great Lokassa ya Mbongo, star bassist Kinshasa's Ngouma 'Le Professeur' Lokito, and from Eastern Congo, newly arrived in the US, solo guitar champion Johnny Bash. Somebody tell me the name of the drummer, and the keyboardist (I'll update this description once I know). Joining Samba Mapangala in singing is longtime Congo great Jonal, the last young singer hired by Franco's OK Jazz before that era ended with Franco's passing... What a night for New York!!

This is a short clip. Nguoma Lokito has played bass guitar with Lokassa ya Mbongo since mid 1980s. A great bass guitarist and fun to watch. Strums his bass guitar with the ease of a true pro
During my trip to the USA I was lucky enough to visit Lokassa M Bongo, after SCott Shuster introduced me to both him and Ngouma "the Professor". During the session Lokassa taught me alot about soukous guitar - mi-composé, rhythms, arrangements and more. We also did some composition time. He showed me plenty of material, including stuff he had done with Kanda Bongo man and the Soukous All Stars. It was quite amazing to be around someone legendary - a true master of the African guitar. He made me incredibly welcome, continually putting food out for me, making sure I was ok, and welcomed me as his family. I honestly didn't want to leave to come back to the UK! I just shot bits of video as and when, most of my time was doing the lesson and learning, I just grabbed video footage as I could get it, rather than going out there to make a "tuition" video so forgive all lighting and framing errors, its just that I shot it in the moment! During our time together, he was just playing with a beat from the "battery" - the drum machine. He started improvising around the style for which he is famed, which quickly turned into him showing a typical arrangement for 3 guitars - the RHYTHM based around the root position, the 2nd guitar slightly higher, then the mi-composé too. It fits together so wonderfully! And within each part there is room to improvise provided it sticks within its role or function in the music. Also there are more notes in there than I initially hear. Plenty of subtle ...

Lokassa came round to showing me the "mi-composé" tuning whereby the D string is an octave higher than a typical guitar tuning. I noticed that he had played "Sai" on the Kanda Bongo Man records and asked him to show me. I said that I had worked it out by ear so if I could hear from the original legend who played it then I would be able to improve. He asked me to show him how I played and I showed him (in standard tuning) to which there is a stretch just to get the notes. Lokassa fell about laughing and said "Mr.Will you have suffered for zero", and ...

This particular clip was shot during one of our breaks, we were just sat eating and drinking (happens alot!) and I just started playing Masanga - a tune I really loved, by Jean Bosco Mwenda. I never saw a transcript of the tune or anything so worked it out pretty much by ear. Lokassa heard me instantly and told me "not to listen to those teachers who dont play this piece so good" (I think he meant to say I had been taught badly!! I didnt tell him I was also my teacher for this piece!). He then showed me the "original" and how its played. Wonderful ...

This is a trailer for Shiko Mawatu's new album Kimbanda Nzila. Rumba fans will be delighted to see Kanda Bongo Man praising Franco and talking about OK Jazz (to enormous applause from the party-hearty soukous-loving crowd) -- and bestowing high honor upon OK Jazz singer Malage de Lugendo who has joined Kanda Bongo Man on this tour. Watch as Kanda Bongo Man STOPS THE MUSIC...to praise Malage. Shiko Mawatu on lead...Lokassa ya Mbongo on rhythm...Ngouma Lokito on bass...Isaac "Machine" Katalayi on drums!
What a pleasure - the total rumba-into-sebene experience complete with KDDODDKO dancer - WOW! It is such a pleasure to watch drummer Isaac "Machine" Katalayi lead the transition into the sebené (you'll want to replay it just to watch him), while Shiko makes EXACTLY the right sounds come out of that Ibañez Guitar! Shiko Mawatu on lead, Lokassa ya Mbongo on rhythm, Ngouma Lokoto on bass guitar!
Malage de Lugendo himself, in Newark! This brilliant VINTAGE CONGOLESE RUMBA performance of L'Infidelité Mado performed by Malage de Lugendo was heard on the semi-weekly Congolese music program of radio station WRIR in Richmond, Virginia, USA, February 19th, 2006. The recording was made live at African Stand in Newark, NJ a few days earlier. Hear the whole program from WRIR - and all of WRIR's cached programs of Congolese music - more than 40 hours of shows posted so far! - at this address: www.radio4all.net On this video - left to right on the live stage at African Stand: Congas: Masambe Bass Guitar: Ngouma Lokito Lead Vocalist: Malage de Lugendo Rhythm Guitar: Lokassa ya Mbongo. yes! It's him!! Second Vocalist: Jonal Drums: Isaac "Machine" Katalayi Lead Guitar and Third Vocalist: Shiko Mawatu Keyboards: Gabrielle (not in view, regrettably!) ...plus lots of audience dancing and having a great time - !
Here's a well-lit clip of Shiko playing Rosa - gorgeous...you can hear rhythm in the background from THE Lokassa ya Mbongo -- and that is Lokassa giving instructions to Shiko at the end, and Shiko making sounds of agreement... This little clip has gotten a lot of attention because it reveals 'close-up' the very relaxed two-fingered style of plucking that was used by Franco. Shiko Mawatu has been active as a Congolese guitarist since the time of Dr. Nico (with whom Shiko toured) and through the entire age of Franco. Shiko is one of today's leadiing exponents of Franco-style playing. Shiko also utilizes an unusual tuning from time to time -- different from Lokassa's 'mi-solo' tuning, and according to Lokassa that special tuning that Shiko uses is fast vanishing. I have to talk to Shiko and find out more about that special tuning. Lokassa says that Shiko may be the only person left who still plays using that unusual tuning. When I find out more about that I'll post it here.
He's called the master of ambiance, the king of Congolese rhythm guitar...he's played on hundreds of recordings and appeared in dozens of music videos - but who has ever heard Lokassa ya Mbongo say a word? YOU!: If you watch this clip.
Lokassa Ya Mbongo and the Soukous Stars Dancers: It doesn't get any better than this; An 8-minute experience of the Soukous Stars at the Liberty Sports Club in Newark. It's a long solo by Lokassa Ya Mbongo. It's so long that bass player Ngouma Lokito and lead guitarist Shiko Mawatu actually GIVE UP, PUT DOWN THEIR INSTRUMENTS AND LEAVE THE STAGE!! The dancers are (left-to-right) Mambo, Adiya, Jessica (new tonight!), and Maria. There are a few close-ups of Lokassa playing his famous fingerstyle rhythm

Press 'pause' to let more video build up before pressing 'play.' On this recording, Jonal sings (he sang with OK Jazz shortly before and after the death of Franco). Shiko Mawatu on guitar. Shiko told me the other night that his first professional guitar playing job was touring with...DOCTOR NICO! Wow!! This video: In Kenya this song is known as "Sina Makossa." According to sources at Africambiance.org this tune was originally recorded by a Kenyan/Tanzanian group called Les Wanyika -- it can be purchased on a CD called 'Kenya Dance Mania', which has some other great East African music on it. Lokassa ya Mbongo does a nice job playing Professor Omari's original rhythm riffs from that recording, while lead guitarist Shiko Mawatu follows the lead of Les Wanyika guitarist Ngereza's original but brings a lot more skill to the playing. Listen to Shiko to hear what Ngereza really wanted to do. You can follow discussions like this among the savants at africambiance.org. I'm grateful to "antony" and "adoyo" there for their insights on SINA MAKOSSA.
LOKASSA YA MBONGO rhythm break about 12:45-minutes into the clip, & great Franco-style solo work by Shiko Mawatu throughout. Also modern Congolese male dancing -watch the WHOLE 19-minutes! They play the Azda Volkswagen commercial commercial at the end, brining back radio memories of the 1970s for millions of Zairoise, Congolese, and others of the Central and East African region. THIS IS THE BEST OF CONGOLESE RUMBA! That's Lokassa ya Mbongo himself behind Malage...Ngouma Lokito is on bass...Shiko Mawatu playing lead guitar, Isaac Katalayi on drums, Mbuta Masamba on congas. It's late on a Saturday night at African Stand in Newark, New Jersey (about 20-minutes from midtown Manhattan New York City). The Congolese, Kenyan, Tanzanian, Nigerian, Cameroonian and American crowd is in the mood, and one of Congo's greatest vocalists has come to town... Malage de Lugendo has flown in from Belgium and he is tired - he came straight from the airport to sing this gig! But wow can he sing...
