In its heyday during the 1970s and 80s, the film industry based in the city of Lahore churned an estimated 200 films per year, but now it produces a much smaller fraction of that. Crippling competition from Bollywood, India's mult-billion dollar film industry, and a dramatic shortage of funds are blamed for the downturn in fortunes. Hashem Ahelbarra reports from Lahore. The name is a portmanteau of the city's initial with Hollywood. The word "Lollywood" was first coined in the summer of 1989 in the now defunct magazine "Glamour" published from Karachi by a gossip columnist Saleem Nasir. Sameena Jaffry was the editor and Iqbal Munir was the publisher of the magazine. Saleem Nasir intended this as a joke to emulate Bollywood.
