Beijing, Jun 30 (PTI) The world''s longest cross-sea bridge, spanning 36.48 kilometers across the mouth of the Jiaozhou Bay in China''s eastern Shandong province, opened to traffic today, four years after construction started. The bridge, connecting urban Qingdao with the city''s less-developed district of Huangdao, cost about 14.8 billion yuan (USD 2.3 billion). Authorities expect the project to boost the development of an industrial zone in Huangdao and to facilitate the rise of foreign trade by increasing the port''s handling capacity, state-run Xinhua news agency said. The business community have been complaining of the inconvenience of the current, less-efficient sea transport, whose operation is at the mercy of the weather. Han Shouxin, deputy director of Qingdao''s traffic management committee, said the bridge will shorten the route between Huangdao and urban Qingdao by 30 km, cutting the travel time down from over 40 minutes to around 20 minutes. Before the project''s completion, the Hangzhou Bay Bridge that spans across the bay of Hangzhou, in eastern Zhejiang province, was considered the world''s longest cross-sea bridge. Qingdao officials today also announced the completion of a 9.47-kilometer-long undersea tunnel that runs parallel to the bridge. The construction of the tunnel, whose lowest part is located 81 metres below sea level, cost another 7 billion yuan. The construction started in August 2007. Engineers overcame huge difficulties in building the tunnel ...

The Lake Pontchartrain Causeway, or the Causeway, consists of two parallel bridges crossing Lake Pontchartrain in southern Louisiana, United States. The longer of the two bridges is either the fifth-longest or sixth-longest in the world depending on definitions, measuring at 23.87 miles (38.42 km) long. The Qingdao Haiwan Bridge in China's Shandong Province, at 26.4 miles (42.49 km), is the longest bridge over water.[2]The Bang Na Expressway, a viaduct in Bangkok, at 54 kilometres (33.55 mi), is excluded from most lists of longest bridges because it crosses water for only a minimal portion of its length. The newly opened Weinan Weihe Grand Bridge is longer but also classed as a viaduct. The bridges are supported by 9500 concrete pilings.[3] The two bridges feature bascule spans over the navigation channel 8 miles (13 km) south of the north shore. The southern terminus of the Causeway is in Metairie, Louisiana, a suburb of New Orleans. The northern terminus is at Mandeville, Louisiana.

The world's longest sea bridge is being built in east China's Shandong Province. The crossing will link downtown Qingdao to Yellow Island and Red Island, making access to the two outposts quick and easy. The total length of the bridge is over 40 kilometers, and will shorten the journey from Qingdao to Yellow Island by nearly 30 kilometers, saving 20 minutes over a journey using the Jiaozhou Bay Expressway. The newly-completed bridge has set several world records. It is the longest trans-oceanic bridge under construction, and the first to have a junction over water. The Red Island junction allows drivers easy access to either Qingdao or Yellow Island. Constructors of the bridge overcame many technological challenges and environmental protection was always given full consideration. Shao Xinpeng, Chief Engineer of Qingdao Trans-Oceanic Bridge, said, "We have raised the corrosion-resistance level of the concrete used. We also made sure that all the material meets the standards needed for the freezing conditions it faces. Secondly, we carefully considered the thickness of the protection layer of the concrete. To protect the environment, when drilling the piles, all the slush was kept in the vessel and then transported away." The bridge will further consolidate the leading role Qingdao plays in the blue economic zone of the Shandong Peninsula, and promote the economic development of the whole area. Bridges are the lifeline of Japan. Since the 1930s, the island nation has dreamt of linking its many parts as a whole. But WWII diverted the incredible resources needed to accomplish this, and only since 1960 has the dream moved again, slowly, toward reality. The final step in this massive undertaking was the Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge, the longest single-span suspension bridge in the world. This marvel of architectonics stands as a testament to the genius of Asian engineering and, judged in a context that perhaps the Japanese understand best, as the most beautiful bridge in the world. We'll watch it rise, from sketch to completion, and see how it fared during the massive Kobe earthquake.
