Lucian Freud 'Portraits' is an analysis of the artist as seen through the eyes of those who have been best placed to study him - his sitters. Over a period of two years, film-maker Jake Auerbach and Freud's biographer William Feaver filmed many of Freud's subjects, ranging from the late Duke of Devonshire and the now Dowager Duchess of Devonshire to fellow painters David Hockney and Celia Paul; from friends such as Brigadier Andrew Parker Bowles to ex-lovers, daughters and grand-daughters.

It is about myself and my surroundings, says British painter Lucian Freud, born in Berlin in 1922, the grandson of Sigmund Freud. Some will know the portraits he has been painting since the 1950s, often nudes, their sagging flesh rendered in thick paint. Among them are self-portraits and portraits of family, friends and acquaintances, of other painters, of Queen Elizabeth II. The first monographic exhibition in France since 1987, ‚Lucian Freud, l'atelier takes the studio as its guiding theme. Like Francis Bacon and Michael Andrews, other members of what fellow-painter Ron Kitaj called the 'London School, Lucian Freud made a return to the studio, choosing to work from the live model in this place that was his own a metaphor for the painter's eye, but also, more generally, for painting itself. The exhibition explores the painter's methods through four themes that organise it into as many sections. From his ‚Interiors a term that in Freud's titles designates his studio he has also painted ‚Exteriors, views of the garden or of nearby factories. The second section, ‚Reflection, presents a number of the selfportraits that the artist regularly produces. Then comes ‚On Painting, with re-makings of works by the masters, from Chardin to Cézanne. Lucian Freud est né le 8 décembre 1922 à Berlin. Son père architecte Ernst Ludwig Freud est le plus jeune fils de Sigmund Freud. Pour échapper au nazisme, en 1934, Lucian et sa famille s'établissent au Royaume-Uni. Après ses études secondaires, Lucian entre en 1938-1939 à la Central School of Arts and Crafts à Londres. Son grand-père Sigmund Freud les rejoint à Londres en 1938, suite à l'Anschluss de l'Autriche. Lucian Freud suit les cours de Cedric Morris à l'East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing à Dedham de 1939-1941. Il est alors mobilisé dans la marine marchande puis démobilisé après trois mois de mer. De 1942 à 1943, il étudie à temps partiel au Goldsmith's College à Londres. En 1943, il illustre les poèmes de Nicholas Moore, puis fait sa première exposition à la galerie Lefèvre à Londres en 1944. Sa peinture est alors dans un style surréaliste. En 1946, il visite Paris, la Grèce. Il reviendra très régulièrement à Paris pour visiter Picasso et Giacometti.
