How did Max Weber and C. Wright Mills define the middle class? How has that definition changed? Does the middle class exist in America?

America's premier 20th century intellectual, C. Wright Mills, was an Enlightenment thinker, who placed a very high value on reason. As a social scientist, reason was Mill's greatest ally. In the very last pages of his short summary work, "The Sociological Imagination," Mills calls for the use of reason in public, political & professional affairs. I would add personal, as well. Much like William James & Max Weber, Mills saw bureaucracy as the great threat to reason, freedom & democracy. His better known works "White Collar" & "The Power Elite" examine those who manage and direct the technocracy.
All institutions within all societies, whether capitalist, socialist or mixed, create bureaucracies to centralize power and wield power more efficiently. In seeking to rationalize and conform to reason, bureaucracies destroy reason, freedom and democracy, according to Max Weber, William James & C. Wright Mills. In forcing the individual to adapt to the demands of Post Modernity, the individual is divided or alienated from himself. People are disengaged from allegiances; neither radical or reactionary. They are inactionary. Bureaucracies produce mass apathy or what the psychiatrist Wilhelm Reich called a mass malaise. If we apply the Greeks definition of the idiot as an altogether private man, then we must conclude many citizens of many societies are indeed idiots.

Obras e citações de Max Weber
The goals of socialism & anarchism are described. Socialism predates Marxism and is concerned with achieving equality within a society. Revolutionary and reform socialism are juxtaposed. Anarchism is concerned with liberating the individual from the authority of the state. The sociologist Max Weber and the philosopher William James saw state bureaucracy destroying individual liberty, as did Emma Goldman and other anarchists.
Beyond Weber's study of all the world's religions, he despaired of any positive change in societies given the threat to democracy & freedom posed by authority in the form of an "Iron Cage" of bureaucracy. Based on reading a recent biography of Max Weber and having just read his seminal work: "The Protestant Work Ethic & the Spirit of Capitalism."
"The Protestant Work Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism" by a founder of sociology, Max Weber, is used to describe how the Calvinist theology of predestination causes Protestants and others to hate those they consider sinners & reprobates. Weber's book also describes the Calvinist justification of the unequal distribution of wealth in the world, as ordained by God.

Mathias Theys misses the 3rd penalty in the Max Weber Cup Final. Although he is in charge of the Achter Olen penalty's he now refused to score. This can't be a coincidence. Some argue he had already signed a contract with Lokomotiv Hasselt, some say it was his girlfriend Tinne who was in his mind. Some even argue he just fell over the ball. The die hard team rocket fans were outrageous and under the lead of "de Fets" they went fighting in the centre of Leuven. They wrote a song about it: team rocket firm: he missed that f*cking penalty Mathias Theys stood on the spot Couldn't believe the chance he got He'd be a hero with one toe punt But sent it at the keeper oh what a cunt THEYS IS GOING HOME, HE'S GOING HOME THEYS IS GOING HOME, HE'S GOING HOME THEYS IS GOING HOME - OH NO HE'S MISSED THE BUS Should he hit to the left Should he hit to the right Don't really matter coz he was shite That's the way our luck goes Couldn't see the ball coz of the size of his nose If I score this it'll be a killer Coz they won't let me at Aston Villa Didn't take a run up for the kick Even me mum thinks I'm a prick DANCE NOW WHATEVER YOU WILL BE BUT HE MISSED THE FUCKING PENALTY SO WE SMASHED UP THE TOWN WHEREVER WE MAY BE COZ HE MISSED THE FUCKING PENALTY GUITAR: Nico Verheyen LYRICS: De Fets DRUM: De Mangel BASS: Ans Vansant SINGER: Jean Mirgaux (origineel: the business - Southgate Euro '96)
