An innovative new approach to juvenile justice reform in Berks County, Pennsylvania, is helping to improve community safety while reducing the number of young people in secure detention and providing them an opportunity for a better future. More at www.macfound.org
The US Supreme Court ruled on May 17, 2010, that juveniles may not be sentenced to life without the possibility of parole for a non-homicide. Bryan Stevenson, founder and executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative and a MacArthur Fellow, presented one of the cases before the Court. Stevenson argued, in Sullivan v Florida, that a sentence of life without parole for juveniles is cruel and unusual punishment and, therefore, unconstitutional. The Courts decision was issued in the companion case, Graham v. Florida. Recognizing the developmental differences between adolescents and adults, the MacArthur Foundation has long supported efforts to reform juvenile justice systems. Research finds that young people are less culpable — and more amenable to rehabilitation — because of their immaturity. More on MacArthur's grantmaking in juvenile justice reform at www.macfound.org

The MacArthur Foundation 2010 Digital Media & Learning Competition 3 min Clip entry. Please comment at www.dmlcompetition.net Overview Teens Creating Android Apps provides District of Columbia high school students with after-school training in software design and mobile application development, while guiding them toward the creation of their own Android Apps. This project presents participants with opportunities to explore computer science, examine cutting-edge technology, innovate, problem solve, communicate, and express themselves. Participants will represent the diverse populations not abundantly present in computer science careers today (African-American and Hispanic males and females). As such, Teens Creating Android Apps is also intended to be a vehicle for probing students thoughts and perspectives about technology, the pursuit of technical careers, and reactions to staggering statistics describing their involvement in computer science. Ultimately, students and their apps will compete for internships with technology-based startup companies in and around DC. In the summer of 2009, Chicago Youth Boxing Club--a nonprofit sports-based youth development organization in Chicago--took five youth and two staff to Tamaula, Guanajuato for two weeks. CYBC youth organized boxing programming, leadership development workshops, and fitness/nutrition education sessions for community residents in Tamaula. The CYBC youth also built a small boxing gym that continues to operate in the community.
