Earthquakes shake Indonesia, Solomon Islands, Formosa (Taiwan), and Chile. On Saturday morning, June 26, Indonesia's North Sumatra province was struck by a 5.0 temblor located 129 kilometers southwest of Padang Sidempuan city. Later that afternoon, the nation's Java Island was jolted by a strong 6.3-magnitude quake that shook buildings in the capital Jakarta as hit 118 kilometers southwest of Tasikmalaya. Also on Saturday, a powerful 6.9-magnitude quake occurred 35 kilometers southwest of Kira Kira off the Solomon Islands, sparking panic among residents as tremors were felt as far away as the capital Honiara, sending people fleeing into the streets. Meanwhile, Chile's Tarapacá region experienced a magnitude-5.6 temblor 127 kilometers southeast of Arica, while in Formosa (Taiwan) on Sunday, a 5.2 magnitude tremor rattled Yilan County. Fortunately, none of the events resulted in any casualties or significant damage, and no tsunami warnings were reported. A 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit close to the border of Mexico and California on Sunday, which was felt as far as Los Angeles and Tijuana. The quake struck near the Mexican city of Mexicali, located some 20 miles south of the border in the Mexican State of Baja California at 3:40 pm, according to the US Geological Survey. The quake was initially reported to be a 6.9-magnitude earthquake but was changed to 7.2-magnitude. The Survey said that the area was hit by minor 3.0 magnitude earthquakes throughout the past week. San Diego media report that the quake left buildings with shattered windows, broken pipes, cracked floors and other damages. For some residents, power was knocked out due to damages. The San Diego News Network reports that the quake shook the city for nearly one minute. The earthquake could be felt as far as Santa Barbara, Calif., and around 20 million people throughout the Greater Los Angeles and San Diego felt the shock. No major damages or deaths have been reported on the US side of the earthquake.
SUMATRA, Indonesia - An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 rattled the Indonesian island of Sumatra on Wednesday, shaking buildings, causing blackouts and prompting a tsunami warning that sent people rushing to higher ground. There were no immediate reports of injuries or widespread damage. The quake struck at 5:15 am local time and was centered 125 miles northwest of Sibolga, in Sumatra, a major island in western Indonesia, the US Geological Survey reported. It was about 28 miles deep, the agency said. The Indonesia Meteorology and Geophysics Agency issued a tsunami warning following the quake, which struck as people in the predominantly Muslim region were preparing for morning prayers. The warning was later lifted.
There have been more than 500 aftershocks from Sunday's 7.2 Mexicali earthquake, and experts said residents in the region can expect many more. People who live near [the epicenter] are getting no sleep, said Kate Hutton, a Caltech seismologist. Most of the aftershocks have been minor -- in the 3 magnitude or less. But there have been six aftershocks that registered more than 5.0, and dozens in the 4 range, according to the US Geological Survey. There was a 4.6 temblor on the border early Tuesday morning. But the last magnitude 5 quake occurred Monday morning. Hutton said theres about a 56% chance that another magnitude 5 aftershock will occur sometime today. She said that over the next week, there might be as many as 22 magnitude 4 aftershocks and maybe two magnitude 5 aftershocks. The good news is that the aftershocks do become less frequent with time, Hutton said. After a week or two, it will only be an occasional jolt. The aftershocks are being felt most acutely in Mexicali, El Centro, Calexico and other border towns hit hardest by the temblor. On Monday, assessment teams inspected buildings and cleanup crews swept up broken glass in Mexicali and its smaller California neighbor, Calexico, both of which sustained modest damage. The death toll rose to two from the quake, which also left more than 230 people injured. The quake, centered about 30 miles south of the border, caused 45 buildings in Baja California to collapse or partly collapse, authorities said. On the US ...

Here is a short video showing a earthquake retrofit for the coming earthquake in southern California. When I inspected earthquake damage after Whittier narrows earthquake in the 90's, I was surprised to see some 1930's houses that were not bolted to the foundation, had remained on their foundation because there were 6 by 6 wooden beams that were inserted into the foundation at 90 degrees to concrete footings. The house shook, but house only moved 1/4 inch total. This is an attempt to replicate that in an inexpensive way Cost for materials was $40. I bought the iron at a scrap yard, otherwise the angle iron would be much more. This is the right time to think about reinforcing your foundation if you also live in areas where tornados, hurricanes or earthquakes will be present. April 4, 2010 Update after 6.9 earthquake in Baja California. Here is the tweet I did on April 1 "bit.ly Here is an example of retrofit of house to prepare for magnitude 9 - 10 earthquake, southern Ca. 10:13 AM Apr 1st via web" By the way, this worked. The front of the house had brickwork that the masonry popped at the corner. the back of the house was fine. I will finish the front of the house by next weekend. See also my video on retrofitting earthquake strapping on water heater. I posted it right after this one.

A meteor is the visible streak of light that occurs when a meteoroid enters the Earth's atmosphere. Meteors typically occur in the mesosphere, and most range in altitude from 75 km to 100 km.[4] Millions of meteors occur in the Earth's atmosphere every day. Most meteoroids that cause meteors are about the size of a pebble. They become visible between about 40 and 75 miles (65 and 120 kilometers) above the earth. They disintegrate at altitudes of 30 to 60 miles (50 to 95 kilometers). Meteors have roughly a fifty percent chance of a daylight (or near daylight) collision with the Earth as the Earth orbits in the direction of roughly west at noon.[clarification needed] Most meteors are, however, observed at night as low light conditions allow fainter meteors to be observed. For bodies with a size scale larger than the atmospheric mean free path (10 cm to several metres)[clarification needed] the visibility is due to the atmospheric ram pressure (not friction) that heats the meteoroid so that it glows and creates a shining trail of gases and melted meteoroid particles. The gases include vaporized meteoroid material and atmospheric gases that heat up when the meteoroid passes through the atmosphere. Most meteors glow for about a second. A relatively small percentage of meteoroids hit the Earth's atmosphere and then pass out again: these are termed Earth-grazing fireballs. Meteors may occur in showers, which arise when the Earth passes through a trail of debris left by a comet ...

CORRECTION. This does not regenerate speech from magnitude spectrogram. This is what I had hoped to do, but have not yet done. Please understand that I do not presume to teach anyone else. These lessons are for me. this regenerates speech. Much of the code is from Dan Ellis's web site Columbia university. I also found a 2-d gaussian smoother yesterday from another web site, but did not note the name of the author. Q. why regenerate speech from a spectrogram? A. (Possibly to be done in lesson 6 or later) experiment with simple code to generate shapes in a spectrogram. (A species of computer aided design). this is the code used today. the subroutines are not supplied but they are thought to be all available on Dan Ellis's web site. (I do not have any of the matlab add-on toolboxes). % result: run this script, and then % sound(y4*100, fs) % the result is quite intelligible if you are used to it % with full screen, the graph looks good %Here's an example of how to use pvoc to slow down a % soundfile of voice (sampled at 16 kHz) to 3/4 speed: % % [d,sr]=wavread('sf1_cln.wav'); % sr = 16000 % 1024 samples is about 60 ms at 16kHz, a good window % y=pvoc(d,.75,1024); % Compare original and resynthesis % sound(d,16000) % sound(y,16000) % dgauss 101 101 3 is difficult to understand % dguass 101 101 1 [y2,fs]=wavread('fr.wav', [1 100000]); y1 = y2(:,1); x = y1; r = 1.0; n = 1024; %%%% % y = pvoc(x, r, n) Time-scale a signal to r times faster with phase vocoder % x is an input sound ...

Earthquake Information: 1. Centered 10 miles deep and 30 miles away on land 2. No mountains, water 3. Simulate only the drawers 4. The magnitude values use the Richter Scale Note: In real life, the camera would be shaking and in the higher magnitudes, the walls would crack and may collapse. This is only a simulation.
