We loved all the animals at Magnolia Plantation. Even the pig that barked at me and the deer peeing right next to me.
Amy surprised me with a vacation for my 30th birthday just a few days before. We love to travel and took a trip down south. This is a submission for the Life in a Day Documentary. They asked the youtube community to film a entire day on 7/24/10. This is our last day in Charleston SC visiting Magnolia Plantation.

Magnolia Plantation is a former plantation in Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana. The site was declared a National Historic Landmark in 2001. The plantation is included in the Cane River Creole National Historical Park. This is a destination on the Louisiana African American Heritage Trail. The plantation traces its roots back to Jean Baptiste LeComte II, who received French and Spanish land grants in the mid-1700s. This was the beginning of the plantation's history, although the structures were not built until the 1800s, and the plantation was not officially in use until 1830. Ambrose LeComte, son of Jean Baptiste, married Julia Buard and began a tradition of community and cultivation on a vast piece of property. Their two daughters, Laura and Ursula Atala, married two sons from the Hertzog family: Bernard Theophile Henry and Matthew Hertzog, respectively. Atala and Matthew Hertzog took over the plantation shortly after their marriage in 1852, thus linking the Hertzog name to Magnolia. Magnolia Plantation is exceptional because of the farming technology, such as the cotton picker tractors and two cotton gins (both steam- and animal-powered). It also has ...

Ghost Adventures is a weekly American paranormal television series that premiered on October 17, 2008 on the Travel Channel. Currently produced by MY-Tupelo Entertainment (a merger of MY Entertainment and Tupelo-Honey Productions[1]), the program follows and stars ghost hunters Zak Bagans, Nick Groff, and Aaron Goodwin as they investigate locations that are reported to be haunted. Hosted and narrated by Bagans, the show originally airs every Friday at 9:00 PM Eastern Time on the Travel Channel. The tagline of the series is: "Can you handle the lockdown?" Self-considered "raw" and "extreme," the program originally began as an independent documentary television film, which was filmed by the crew in 2004 and produced by 4Reel Productions in 2006. The Sci Fi Channel first presented 4Reel's Ghost Adventures on July 25, 2007. The documentary centers on the trio's investigation of alleged paranormal activity in and around Virginia City, Nevada, which the crew returned to on the third season of the series,[2] and in Goldfield, Nevada.

Just sitting here in the Motel in Daytona, Florida - waiting for Marg to shower up, then go get some dinner. It's so nice to see the ocean and the sand here is amazing. The full moon also helps! We took a walk down the beach and ended up in some kitschy sort of seaside area, reminiscent of Las Vegas if it was an ocean side town. It's kind of like you put Brighton and Las Vegas in a blender with a pinch of homophobic young American muscle volleyball guy and shook it all up. We found a bar that's right next door that literally has a balcony on the beach. They look like the serve a pretty sweet seafood/caribbean type menu. Should be all good. Daytona was literally a place to lay our heads on the way to Miami, so, I'm not sure if we'll post anything from here on the blog. Then again.....We'll take the camera to dinner and see what happens........Should probably say something briefly about Charleston: Very beautiful - and VERY similar to Savannah...although - Margot and I agreed that we liked Savannah more. Even though a lot of people told us the opposite. The Plantation we visited was out of this world. And, I did get to see that traditional Southern style house you see in movies like Forrest Gump, the Notebook, or Gone with the Wind. We'll own a house like that one day!! Anyway - didn't get to see any alligators...but I saw some other wildlife. I did eat some pretty sweet oysters in Charleston, all washed down with some refreshingly cold Yeungling. And yes....I was freaked ...

In the brick slave quarters, each two-room unit was meant to house an entire family. At times, upwards of 10 family members were crowded into the tiny space. The living conditions were cramped and oppressive, with only a small fireplace for heat and cooking. Restless Spirits A form of silent rebellion, the slaves at Magnolia often used voodoo to cast evil wishes on their oppressive masters. The enslaved blacksmiths were tasked with forming the metal Christian crosses that marked the Lecomte family graves. While the crosses were beautifully ornate, they also included West African voodoo symbols hidden within the design. As the Civil War ravaged the American South, Federal soldiers closed in on Magnolia's main house and turned it into a stronghold. The slave quarters were then named sharecropper housing; however, the lives of slaves did not change much. Instead of being owned property and working only for room and board, the slaves became free sharecroppers, working for script they could only use at the plantation store -- again, mostly for room and board. The enslaved workers continued to use voodoo as spiritual revenge for such an unfair life. In 1897, Magnolia's main house was rebuilt as an exact replica of the original plantation home that had been greatly damaged during the Civil War. The wood used during this construction was taken from former slave quarters and many believe holds the memories and experiences of the oppressed people that lived there for decades ...
It is the treatment of the slaves who cleared the land, built the main house and store, and planted and harvested the fields that has left this historic mansion riddled with ghost stories and paranormal activity. Though some would say the slaves at Magnolia were treated humanely, lingering artifacts tell a different story. Leg stocks used for public punishment, humiliation and starvation still stand on the property. There are journal entries from Lecomte family members and foremen that describe hunting escaped slaves all the way to Texas.
