Tuesday Oct 6 PETALING JAYA: The Indonesian media is alleging that Malaysia has been sending boxes containing expired foodstuff to Padang. In an immediate response, however, Malaysian officials dismissed the allegations, saying that an investigation found no expired foodstuff was delivered. An official told The Star that during the Royal Malaysian Air Force flights to evacuate some 300 Malaysian students in Padang last week, the military had loaded the plane with emergency food supplies to be given to Malaysians in Padang. The armed forces will normally have emergency supplies in boxes containing bottled water, tea, coffee, jam, biscuits and other foodstuff. Different products have different expiry dates. From time to time, the expiry dates of these products will be checked and any expired ones will be taken out and a new sticker with the latest expiry date will be put on the box. When we decided to evacuate the students, we brought the boxes on the flight for Malaysians who were stranded there, including our Smart and medical teams who were planning to help in rescue efforts, said an official. He said some of the boxes sent to Padang were left behind as most of the Malaysian students decided to return home and these boxes were donated to the Padang mayor.
