Vikram Gokhale releasing Kalyani Bondre's album of Indian Classical Music and Marathi Natyasangeet in November 2006.
Pandit Vasantarao Deshpande is one of my favoite and greatest singer. He was famous in realm of Natya-sangeet - analogous to musical plays. He has one of best voices very original and deep. Enjoy. Nita Ajay. Songs: Ghe-e-chand makarand, Dhir Dhari and Gulzar nar ti madhubala Vasantrao Deshpande was born in Murtijapur, Dist-Akola(MS), in India. He learned from several gurus, refusing to tie himself down to a single school of singing. His more famous gurus were Shankarrao Sapre of Nagpur, Sureshbabu Mane, Aman Ali Khan of Bhendibazaar gharana, and Ramkrishnabuwa Vaze. But the most important influence on him was Dinanath Mangeshkar, and Vasantrao was the sole true inheritor of Dinanath's mercurial style of singing.
Original song by Bakul Padit. This marathi natyasangeet sung by Pratibha Damle during Diwali function at Greater Richmond Marathi Mandal.
Hirabai Barodekar was born into an exceptionally legendary family of Hindustani singers, who were the trendsetters of the Kirana gharana. She was the daughter of Ustad Abdul Karim Khan and the niece of Ustad Abdul Waheed Khan. It is very well understood that she took to singing from a very early age. Her mother, though wanted her to pursue her studies seriously, but, Hirabai was much more attracted in music and arts. She trained under both the stalwarts, and also under his famed brother Sureshbabu Mane. During her early years, she was more attracted to on-stage performances and had been a fine stage actress. Yet, classical music was beckoning her to establish her position securely. Though of an extremely shy disposition, she was cajoled by the formidable Kesarbai Kerkar to sing for the public. And, since then, her contribution has been breathtaking to every form of classical music she had laid her hands upon. She was a true follower of the Kirana style of rendition, and had contributed substantially to the Marathi musical genre. Apart from Ustad Abdul Karim Khan`s own talented contributions to the musical society, he had given three highly gifted children, Sureshbabu Mane, Hirabai Barodekar and Saraswati Rane, all of whom were greatly responsible for the dissemination of the Kirana style in several parts of the country. Of the three children, it was Hirabai who achieved a great deal of fame during her lifetime. She was born in Miraj in 1905 to Abdul Karim Khan`s second ...

This is a film of the period when men used to play female characters in plays. A must see for lovers of Marathi rangabhumi.
A Marathi natya-sangeet song: in my opinion one of the most heart-rending songs ever written or sung.

Here is an audio recording of Utd. Abdul Karim Khansahib, reviver of the Kirana Gharana (if not founder) singing the very popular "Prem Seva Sharan" Marathi Natyageet. One of the reasons Khansahib was so popular was that he picked up songs popular withing specific regions to gain popularity. Khansahib did this with Marathi Natya Sangeet. He has also sung the popular Natya Sangeet "Nachi Sundari Karu Kopa' (based on Raag Jajaiwanti). Many of Khansahib's students started off their careers (during and following tutelage) in Natya Sangeet, like Pt. Sawai Gandharva, Smt. Hirabai Badodekar and others. Many artists today feel that Marathi Natya Sangeet is a degeneration from the "more advanced" Hindustani Shastriya (Classical) Music. In this recording, Khansahib has completely deproved that now absurd belief. Enjoy! : )
