Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Tools of Freedom - www.activistpost.com "True peace is not merely the absence of tension: it is the presence of justice." (1955) "There are certain things in our nation and in the world which I am proud to be maladjusted and which I hope all men of good-will will be maladjusted until the good societies realize — I say very honestly that I never intend to become adjusted to — segregation and discrimination. I never intend to become adjusted to religious bigotry. I never intend to adjust myself to economic conditions that will take necessities from the many to give luxuries to the few. I never intend to adjust myself to the madness of militarism, to self-defeating effects of physical violence. But in a day when sputniks and explorers are dashing through outer space and guided ballistic missiles are carving highways of death through the stratosphere, no nation can win a war. It is no longer the choice between violence and nonviolence. It is either nonviolence or nonexistence." (1963) "A riot is the language of the unheard." (1963) "We must live together as brothers or perish together as fools." (1964) "Ultimately a genuine leader is not a searcher for consensus, but a molder of consensus." (1968) "On some positions, Cowardice asks the question, "Is it safe?" Expediency asks the question, "Is it politic?" And Vanity comes along and asks the question, "Is it popular?" But Conscience asks the question "Is it right?" And there comes a time when ...
A martin Luhter King Day Jr. Tribute video consisting of a compilation, beginning with ronald reagan, who strongly opposed a Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a Federal Holiday, but signed into Law in 1983 so he could attempt to mend his lousy record on Civil and Human Rights, and john mccain, who Voted Against a MLK Day as a Federal Holiday in 1983, then again in 1984, 1987 and 1994. Only recently did bigot john mccain recant on Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a Federal Holiday, since the bigot realized he needed the black vote to run for anything beyond senator of Arizona, although ironically, he lost the Presidential election to Our First Black President, a Nobel Laureate, just like the brilliant Martin Luther King Jr.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. changed the course of history and inspired us to build what he called "the beloved community." The King Legacy of Service 25th Anniversary video tells the story of how Dr. King's birthday evolved into a national day of service. Featuring civil rights luminaries such as Congressman John Lewis, Reverend Dr. Joseph Lowery, and Ruby Bridges, the 6-minute video reminds us of the importance of keeping Dr. King's legacy of service alive and challenges us to make service a part of our lives ─ everyday of the year.
SPECIAL REPORT - MLK 25th anniversary Speeches and assassination Footage from all the major networks from April 1968. By 1968, violence had edged its way into the movement. Black Panther Party members carried loaded weapons; riots had erupted across the country; and numerous civil rights organizations had taken up the mantra "Black Power!" Yet Martin Luther King held strong to his beliefs, even as he saw the Civil Rights Movement being torn in two. Violence is what brought King back to Memphis in April 1968. Striking Sanitation Workers in Memphis On February 12, thirteen hundred African-American sanitation workers in Memphis went on strike. Though there had been a long history of grievances, the strike was begun as a response to a January 31 incident in which 22 black sanitation workers were sent home without pay during bad weather while all the white workers remained on the job. When the City of Memphis refused to negotiate with the 1300 striking workers, King and other civil rights leaders were asked to visit Memphis in support. On Monday, March 18, King managed to fit in a quick stop in Memphis, where he spoke to over 15000 who had gathered at Mason Temple. Ten days later, King arrived in Memphis to lead a march in support of the striking workers. Unfortunately, as King led the crowd, a few of the protesters got rowdy and smashed the windows of a storefront. The violence spread and soon countless others had taken up sticks and were breaking windows and looting stores ...

Members seek, through their practice of Buddhism, to develop the ability to live with confidence, to create value in any circumstance and to contribute to the well-being of friends, family and community. Our philosophy is rooted in the concept of "human revolution," a process of inner transformation through Buddhist practice. It is a process that leads us to develop our character and to act not only for our personal fulfillment but also for the betterment of society. We believe that happiness is being able to experience profound joy that comes from never being defeated by any problem in life. In fact, we use lifes challenges as catalysts to deepen and expand our inner lives. True happiness results from our efforts to manifest our highest potential — wisdom, compassion, courage and vitality. The SGI-USA is the American branch of the SGI network, with more than 2600 neighborhood discussion groups and nearly 100 SGI-USA centers throughout the country. The core activity for all SGI-USA members is the neighborhood discussion meeting.
