Known and loved for introducing darker and deeper themes to contemporary children's literature, Sendak's classic books offered fantastical and even dangerous journeys for his subjects. In 2011 he released Bumble-Ardy, the first book in 30 years for which he both wrote the story and drew illustrations. It spent five weeks on the New York Times children's best-seller list. Sendak appeared earlier this year on The Colbert Report, hilariously offering his opinion on everything from the "idiocy" of Newt Gingrich to respecting the depth of kids. "There is something in this country that is so opposed to understanding the complexity of children," said Sendak. "It's quite amazing." Sendak obviously never failed to understand that complexity, and for that he will surely be missed.

Sendak, who died early Tuesday in Danbury, Conn. at age 83, four days after suffering a stroke, revolutionized children's books and how we think about childhood simply by leaving in what so many writers before had excluded. His kids misbehaved and didn't regret it and in their dreams and nightmares fled to the most unimaginable places. Monstrous creatures were devised from his studio, but no more frightening than the grownups in his stories or the cloud of the Holocaust that darkened his every page. Rarely was a man so uninterested in being loved so adored. His books sold millions of copies and his most curmudgeonly persona became as much a part of his legend as Maurice Sendak Dead ! "Where the Wild Things Are," his signature book, and a hit movie in 2009. Communities attempted to ban his work, but he also had friends in the most powerful places. President Bill Clinton awarded Sendak a National Medal of the Arts in 1996 and in 2009 President Obama read "Where the Wild Things Are" for the Easter Egg Roll.
Maurice Sendak, the US author of the best-selling children's book Where the Wild Things Are, has died aged 83. His long-time editor, Michael di Capua, told The New York Times the author died in Danbury, Connecticut, after complications from a recent stroke. He wrote some 17 books and was a prolific illustrator, but was best-known for his 1963 tale of Max, who became the "king of all wild things". It was made into a Hollywood film in 2009, directed by Spike Jonze. There have also been several other adaptations including an animated short in 1973 and an opera in 1980. The book, which became a children's classic in the US and sold more than 19 million copies worldwide, told the story of a boy who goes on a journey through his own imagination after he is sent to bed without supper. Considered controversial for its images when it was first published - which some claimed to have scared children - the book went on to earn Sendak a prestigious Caldecott Medal for best children's book in 1964.

In 1999 Pilobolus brought in its first outside collaborators, Maurice Sendak and Arthur Yorinks, to create "A Selection," a meditation on the Holocaust; the creation of this piece is documented in the film Last Dance (2002). This video is a ten minute compilation from that film (available on a highly recommended DVD). I created this compilation in 2007, back in the early days of low-resolution YouTube. I haven't made it available for quite a few years, but with the death of Maurice Sendak today I thought it worth sharing again. Here's an article about the original piece, "A Selection": www.nytimes.com For more great music, musical theatre and dance videos, please visit www.theBestArts.com - and follow us at www.facebook.com
