The Mavericks Surf Contest was no day at the beach for spectators when they got slammed by some rogue waves. Unexpected waves breaking on shore swept dozens of spectators from their perches at the southern tip of Mavericks beach. Authorities spent the rest of the day warning the thousands attending the event about the dangers, and closed off large portions of the beach. While the debate over spectator safety raged on shore, South African Chris Bertish beat 23 other surfers and carried home the $50000 first place prize. He said he will spend part of the prize money paying back his brother and two friends, who loaned him money to buy his airplane ticket. "It's hard to explain how much water was moving around out there," said Chris, "I took the worst beating of my life out there." Mavericks Big Wave Surfing is a annual event that attracts surfers from around the world to Half Moon Bay, California. This years event was held on Saturday, February 13th, 2010. Dispite a few wet spectators, this years Mavericks surfing contest was one of the best competitions ever.

Mavericks Fair Warning - this wave occurred 5 minutes before the big wave that injured 13 and soaked dozens. This wave was fair warning that your were not in a safe area. There were at least 4 waves that flooded the area this morning, but only 2 that caused injuries.

Big waves were swept into the spectator areas during the 2010 Mavericks Surf Contest. This particular wave was one of the larger ones and I believe caused the woman in the middle to break her ankle. The contest coordinators warned spectators several times to stay out of this area but people still did not listen.

Mavericks breaks over an ocean reef that is one-half mile off the coast of Pillar Point in Half Moon Bay California. 24 of the World's greatest big wave surfers compete for the Mavericks trophy. Ballistic Tv made the treck and grover did his best to get the clip. Long drive from San Diego just for the day but totally worth it. These guys live for the juice. Careless spectators on the jetty were injured when a high tide rouge wave washed them and their belongings over the rocks. I say solid 40 with occasional 50s.

Mavericks contest 2010: High tide combined with 20 feet 17 second buoy readings means you shouldn't turn your back on the ocean, even if others do. A couple of clips of the surges taking out people, cameras, tents, boats, the whole nine. Be careful!!!
