Matthew 6: 1-6, 16-18 ASH WEDNESDAY 1. Today we begin the season of Lent by receiving ASHES on our foreheads. Lent in Pilipino and Kapampangang is CUARESMA. The word CUARESMA comes from the word CUARENTA, meaning forty. Lent reminds us of the 40 years dessert trek of the Israelites to the Promised Land. It also reminds us of the 40 days of the Lord in the dessert before he accomplished his passion, death and resurrection. It also refers to the forty days seminar of catechumen in preparation for their Baptism on Easter Sunday. a. LENT IS A JOURNEY. It is the journey of our community towards salvation. Salvation happens in a COMMUNITY. As a COMMUNITY WE COME BACK to God. We need the community to save ourselves. It is within the community that God saves us. St. Paul said, "No one lives alone by himself. No one dies alone by himself." We need one another to save ourselves. We are members of the Mystical Body of Christ. Inasmuch as the whole body comes to the rescue in times of infection, the whole Body of Christ comes to the rescue and we unite ourselves as a community to heal the wounds of sin. b. Sin has a SOCIAL DIMENSION. Our sins of actions and omissions have an effect in our community. That is why in the beginning of our community mass we confess our sins by saying, "I confess my to Almighty God and to you my brothers and sisters, that I have sinned through my own fault, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do... c. This video is my personal Christian take on how the story of Easter and Christ's death might have been perceived had social networks existed around the time of 33 AD. Follow the story through this narrative to spread the real meaning of the Easter holiday.
March 8, 2011. Xt3.com, an online Catholic social network created for the 2008 WYD in Sydney, Australia, has unveiled a new online calendar for Lent 2011. The calendar was made to help Catholics grow spiritually during the 40-day period leading up Easter. This new calendar offers daily reflections, passages from Scripture, videos that explain Catholic teaching, and stories from the lives of the saints. The calendar will also suggest a daily "Lenten act" to help Christians prepare for Easter. The first calendar feature will appear on Ash Wednesday, March 9. More info: www.xt3.com We are at the beginning of Lent: a time of penance, purification and conversion. It is not an easy program, but then Christianity is not an easy way of life. It is not enough just to be in the Church, letting the years roll by. In our life, in the life of Christians, our first conversion — that unique moment which each of us remembers, when we clearly understood everything the Lord was asking of us — is certainly very significant. But the later conversions are even more important, and they are increasingly demanding. To facilitate the work of grace in these conversions, we need to keep our soul young; we have to call upon our Lord, know how to listen to him and, having found out what has gone wrong, know how to ask his pardon. "If you call upon me, I will listen to you," we read in this Sunday's liturgy. Isn't it wonderful how God cares for us and is always ready to listen to us — waiting for man ...
March 8, 2011. Lent is the 40 days before Easter during which Christians prepare for the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus. It's meant to remember the 40 days Jesus spent in the desert preparing himself for public preaching. It begins on Ash Wednesday, when a priest places ashes on the head or forehead of Catholics and invites them repent. The ashes come from the olive branches that were blessed on Palm Sunday from the previous year. Every Friday of Lent, the Catholic Church asks everyone to not eat meat as a sign of penance. They also hold a fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. The Church also urges Christians to practice other forms of piety such as giving alms, making a pilgrimage or any other willful deprivation to prepare for Easter. An English-language companion video to my recent report on the storming of the town hall, which you can see here: www.youtube.com In this video, you will learn: - names of some areas where Carnival is celebrated - the different names for German Carnival - some background information about Carnival
February 3, 2011. Pope salutes fellow Germans from Cologne Carnival. The Cologne Carnival is a carnival that takes place every year in Cologne, Germany. Traditionally, the "fifth season" (carnival season) is declared open at 11 minutes past 11 on the 11th of November. The Carnival spirit is then temporarily suspended during the Advent and Christmas period, and picks up again in earnest in the New Year. The time of merrymaking in the streets is officially declared open at downtown square Alter Markt on the Thursday before the beginning of Lent. Street carnival, a week-long street festival, also called "the crazy days", takes place between the Fat Thursday (Weiberfastnacht) and ends on Ash Wednesday (Aschermittwoch). The highlight of the carnival is Rose Monday (Rosenmontag), two days before Ash Wednesday. All through these days, Cologne folks go out masqueraded. The typical greeting during the festival is Kölle Alaaf!, a Kölsch phrase which can be translated as "Cologne alive!" Dreigestirn Every year there are 3 people (the Dreigestirn) who are granted the titles of Jungfrau, Prinz, and Bauer (virgin, prince and farmer), who pay a large sum of money for their privileges. The carnival prince is deemed to be the highest representative of the festivities, leading the main parades throughout the week. Traditionally, the Jungfrau ("Virgin") is always portrayed by a man dressed as a female. As a entity, the trio is existing since 1883. In earlier times these were individual ...

Ash Wednesday: Is it in the Bible? No, it is not. Ash Wednesday is actually of pagan origin and was admitted into the church beliefs of the Catholic Church a few hundred years after Christ. This was the era when Constantine was attempting to weld pagans and Christians into a unit within the Roman kingdom. Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent. Roman Catholic churches of the Latin Rite use this service to prepare themselves for the passion and resurrection of Christ through self-examination, repentance, prayer, fasting, and self-denial. Ashes from the burned palms of the preceding year's Palm Sunday are blessed. With these ashes, the priest marks a cross on the foreheads of those who come forward and kneel, saying, "Remember, man, that dust thou art, and unto dust thou shalt return." (Genesis 3:19 KJV) From Biblical times, sprinkling oneself with ashes has been a mark of sorrow for sin. Those who honor Ash Wednesday add to this meaning of penance a second point; the need to prepare for a holy death. The churches of the Anglican Communion, as well as some other Protestant churches observe this day. Eastern Rite churches do not. Their Lent begins on the preceding Monday Miércoles De Ceniza: ¿Está en la Biblia?
All in the video! :) Yes, just in case: The meaning of Lent in the 40 solemn days Jesus had until He gave us His life. He went to a mountain to pray to God; He also did not eat or drink for the 40 days until His Death. So, during Lent, besides not eating meat on Ash Wednesday and every Friday until Easter Sunday, we sacrifice material possession. As two of them, I decided to stay off of Twitter and youtube for 40 days. Yeah, it's gonna be hard, but don't you think it was hard for Jesus to go through the Pain He went through just so we could be living? Yes, so this is why I am doing it. I know, I have two collabs with jubaleex3 and nickjonasgurl99. I'm sorry guys, but I feel right doing this. I promise I'll have my parts. :) When I come back, there probably will be a Halo marathon, just to get it started, a trailer for a mini-movie! I cannot wait for you guys to see it! :D So, I said I had my Tumblr here, so it's: xfearless.tumblr.com. Follow me! :) And my AIM is disclosed. :) I'll tell my friends, just to be sure no weirdos come on. O_o I love you all, and I'll see you in 40 days! :) God Bless! :D -anna.

Bishop Peggy A. Johnson delivers a special message about the meaning of Ash Wednesday.
Very first alone made bulla. Now you might be wondering what "bulla" is... well... it's... um... I think the english definition is "sweet bread"? .... Which I think is lame. It's a yummy dough that's baked into a fluffy, soft goodness which is made better by various toppings. Here I made cinnamon rolls - which I think most people know. I also tried putting jam on top - which is risky business because the jam can overflow onto the baking sheet easily. I also made "gubbar" (which is swedish, in english they are "men", or more like "old men"). You eat Fastlagsbulla here in Finland on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. I think Fastan in English is Lent. The Fastlagsbulla is a bulla that is filled with cream and almond paste or marzipan. It is GOOD. The Fastlagsgubbe is my own idea that I came up with as I was baking. I haven't seen that anywhere else. It was a MESS to eat - two people shared the gubbe - but it was DELICIOUS. Num num!
