Metra 193 leads a outbound express through LaGrange with some horn action.
18th St is at the south end of Metra Electric's maintenance shops (the parked train is on a stub out of the shops), and south of where Illinois Central's Central Station used to be. Seen from the pedestrian overpass, a 4-unit, main-line University Park local train races and then overtakes a local, one-unit Blue Island Branch train. Next, from on the 18th St platform itself, a University Park express of Metra's newest cars (essentially electric versions of the newest Kinki-Sharyo cars for the diesel lines) speeds by with a short blast on the horn. Following not far behind is a rush-service NICTD South Shore Line interurban, the last of its kind in the country, with 6 cars bound for Michigan City, IN.
First, Amtrak P42 165 pulls into Naperville with the eastbound Southwest Chief, meeting Amtrak P42 158 on the westbound California Zephyr. A nice K5LA horn dual is the result! Then as the Zephyr and Chief both leave leave, BNSF 4642 flies past both trains, and all three of them have a TRIPLE horn dual! A NS C40-9 is third out on the freight. Then finally just a minute or two after the freight, Metra MP36 404 pushes an inbound into the station with more horn action. Two horn duals, a meet, a overtake and a Metra right behind it all, all giving tons of horn. Not bad for a station that's supposed to be a quiet zone!

Metra F40PHM-2 #213 pushes an inbound train to chicago and gives some pretty good horn action for the track crew that is working along side the tracks
Apart from the freight trains, there is always the passenger traffic which is what this line is known for. The late morning and mid afternoon see a great deal of Metra even though it isn't rush hour. Amtrak trains 3,4,5,and 6 also come during this time. Congress Park is a great place for viewing Metra because only a select few trains stop here, particularly during rush hour. Freight action can be seen in the previous video. 10:06AM- It looks like Amtrak 380, the Inbound Illinois Zephyr will be arriving early into Chicago Union Station. The horn may sound good, but this unit needs an overhaul. P42DC #47 10:13AM- Metra 1262 is 10 minutes late as it accelerates towards the Brookfield Stop. Cab Car #8589 F40PHM-2 #198 10:58AM- Metra 1229 speeds up after stopping at Brookfield, passes Congress Park, then slows for it's next stop at LaGrange. F40PHM-2 #189 11:14AM- Inbound 1264 is also a bit late as it heads for the windy city. Cab Car #8585 F40PHM-2 #191 12:59PM- The engineer of Metra 1231 shows off his Nathan P5 as he approaches. F40PHM-2 #198 3:30PM- Southwest Chief 3 left Chicago one minute late today. Number three completes the set of the four long distance trains today. P42DC #84 P42DC #64 2:00PM- Metra 1233 is one of the few outbound trains that actually stops at Congress Park. No one even got on or off! EJ&E crossing is one junction thats been near me most of my life, but I have never done any railfanning there. I was quite surprised with how well photography angles were over here. The surrounding fall foliage only made it better. This is where the CN/EJ&E Matteson/Eastern Subdivision and the Metra Rock Island district intersect. CN Joliet Yard is just to the North so all movements going East start here. There is a tower still standing in the Southeast quadrant, but it has been closed for years. This is now one of my favorite places along both sets of trackage. A future place to shoot IAIS in good light perhaps?? To give you an idea where we are, Chicago-bound Metra 516 left Joliet Union Station only 3 minutes ago. I was at the station when it pulled in as 511. The engineer in #8547 gives lots of horn action as he approaches the junction. Pushing is MP36PH-3 #409. 1:31PM- Metra has cleared EJ&E Crossing and now M302 has the green allowing them to advance out of Joliet Yard. The power might not be orange, but these GEs really did put on a show throttling up with the heavy train. IC C44-9W #2722 CN C40-8M #2437 1:46PM- The power has passed me and I go to another location to view M302- the Gougar Road Crossing in New Lenox, IL. It didn't take long for it to throttle up out of the valley and now it picks up more speed through suburbia. Filmed-5/16/09-I was on the BNSF Chicago SUB filming out the front window, and since it was Saturday the crew still works on the tracks just to tighten things up a little. Anyway...the train just left the Berwyn Station, and gives the crew some horn....3 Time Action!!!!
