Cinco de Mayo is a date of great importance for the Mexican and Chicano communities. It marks the victory of the Mexican Army over the French at the Battle of Puebla. Althought the Mexican army was eventually defeated, the "Batalla de Puebla" came to represent a symbol of Mexican unity and patriotism. With this victory, Mexico demonstrated to the world that Mexico and all of Latin America were willing to defend themselves of any foreign intervention. Especially those from imperialist states bent on world conquest. Cinco de Mayo's history has its roots in the French Occupation of Mexico. The French occupation took shape in the aftermath of the Mexican-American War of 1846-48. With this war, Mexico entered a period of national crisis during the 1850's. Years of not only fighting the Americans but also a Civil War, had left Mexico devastated and bankrupt. On July 17, 1861, President Benito Juarez issued a moratorium in which all foreign debt payments would be suspended for a brief period of two years, with the promise that after this period, payments would resume. The English, Spanish and French refused to allow president Juarez to do this, and instead decided to invade Mexico and get payments by whatever means necessary. The Spanish and English eventually withdrew, but the French refused to leave. Their intention was to create an Empire in Mexico under Napoleon III. Some have argued that the true French occupation was a response to growing American power and to the Monroe ...

The year 2010 marks the 200th anniversary of Mexicos independence from Spain and the 100th anniversary of the Mexican Revolution, pivotal events in Mexicos struggle for self-governance. Mexico, particularly the historic, colonial heartland of this country, continues to fascinate me. It is also the perfect winter getaway for sun-starved Canadians, and I thought another visit to Mexico was in order. So on February 3, 2010 I arrived in the pouring rain in Guadalajara, the nations 2nd largest city. Fortunately the weather cleared up the next day and I was able to check out the scenic downtown of Tlaquepaque as well as the arts and crafts market of Tonala, both located in the southern part of Guadalajara. On a luxury Internet-equipped bus I headed to my first weekend excursion from February 5 to 7 to Guanajuato, a gorgeous silver mining town and UNESCO World Heritage Site about 4 hours from Guadalajara. My gracious hosts Sujei and Roberto showed me around their city for 2.5 days: from the silver mine La Valenciana with its magnificent baroque church, to the unique street tunnels that connect the city underground, the El Pipila monument overlooking Guanajuato's colourful houses, to the estudiantina - a walking night-time concert through the scenic alleyways of Guanajuato, the gorgeous little squares with their bars and restaurants to the rather scary Mummies Museum - Guanajuato is a real treasure. I even went mountain-biking in the sierra above Guanajuato and enjoyed the sweeping views over the Mexican mountainscape. I spent February 8 to 12 back in Guadalajara, more exactly in Tlaquepaque where I studied Spanish at the Guadalajara Language Center every ...

The Battle of the Alamo (February 23 - March 6, 1836) was a pivotal point in the Texas Revolution. The battle only lasted 13 days. The battle was held on the Alamo Mission near San Antonio de Béxar (modern-day San Antonio, Texas). Music of Jimmy Hendrix(Born Johnny Allen Hendrix; November 27, 1942 September 18, 1970). Santa Anna or López de Santa Anna, was a Mexican political leader, general and President who greatly influenced early Mexican and Spanish politics and government. He first fought against the independence from Spain, and then supported it. He rose to the ranks of general and president at various times over a turbulent 40-year career. He was President of Mexico on seven non-consecutive occasions over a period of 22 years. James "Jim" Bowie (April 10, 1796 March 6, 1836), a 19th-century American pioneer and soldier, played a prominent role in the Texas Revolution, culminating in his death at the Battle of the Alamo. Jim Bowie is well known for his Bowie Knife. He also died on the Alamo. William Barret Travis (August 9, 1809 March 6, 1836) was a 19th century American lawyer and soldier. At the age of 26, he was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Texian Army, and commanded the Republic of Texas forces.
The following is an excerpt from Wikipedia:- "The Yellow Rose of Texas" is a traditional folk song which has long been popular in the United States and is considered an unofficial state song of Texas. The actual author is unknown; the original publisher (Firth, Pond & Co.) only stated that it was composed and arranged expressly for Charles H. Brown by "JK" The A. Henry Moss Papers in the Center for American History has an unpublished early handwritten version of what may be a similar song, perhaps dating from the time of the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836. Briefly stated, the song is based on a Texas legend from the days of the Texas War of Independence. According to the legend, a free African American woman named Emily D. West, a mulatto and hence the reference to "yellow", seized by Mexican forces during the looting of Galveston, seduced General Antonio López de Santa Ana, President of Mexico and commander of the Mexican forces. The legend credits her supposed seduction with lowering the guard of the Mexican army and facilitating the Texan victory in the battle of San Jacinto waged in 1836 near present-day Houston. Santa Ana's opponent was General Sam Houston, who won the battle literally in minutes, and with almost no casualties.
This is a video I made also for my first YouTube account, at some point in the last couple of years, in honor of my other country, Mexico. I'm posting it here and now to celebrate the upcoming 200th anniversary of Mexican independence from Spain, which was proclaimed on September 16th, 1810. My father is Mexican, and I spent a significant portion of my childhood and young adulthood in Mexico with him. I had the opportunity to travel extensively around the country, and to share in the richness of its culture and the warmth of its people. Mexico is a country that has all the resources it needs in order to become the major regional power that it should already be. After 71 years under the rule of a single political party and a semi-socialist system, Mexico elected Vicente Fox as President, a Center-Right candidate from the National Action Party, (PAN), which had always been in opposition. That led to an opening of the economy and the markets to foreign investment, and to a general liberalization of Mexican society. In 2006, Mexicans narrowly elected Felipe Calderon to the Presidency, furthering the gains achieved by the National Action Party in its quest for a strengthening of the free market system in Mexico. President Calderon has also taken substantial actions regarding Mexico's national security that make him the first modern Mexican President to truly take a stand against organized crime in order to protect the rule of law. The Mexican people and their leaders still ...

Letter dated February 25, 1836, from Lt. Col. William B. Travis to Major-General Sam Houston during the Mexican siege of the Alamo. The Texas Declaration of Independence from Mexico was signed on March 2, 1836, and the Alamo fell to a Mexican assault shortly after this letter was written, on March 6, 1836. According to the Texas State Library: The February 25, 1836, letter from Travis to Houston is transcribed in John H. Jenkins's Papers of the Texas Revolution, Volume 4, pages 433-434, as Document #2177. According to his annotation, the letter was copied from the "Arkansas Gazette [Little Rock], April 12, 1836. Also part in Parker, Trip to the West and Texas [2nd ed.] 360-61." There are several other letters from Travis written from the Alamo. The more famous of these was dated February 24, 1836 and addressed to "The People of Texas and All Americans In The World" - this letter is relatively easy to find through a normal web-based search engine and is worth a read, too. Text: Travis To Major-General Sam Houston February 25, 1836 HEADQUARTERS, FORT OF THE ALAMO: Sir; On the 23rd of Feb., the enemy in large force entered the city of Bexar, which could not be prevented, as I had not sufficient force to occupy both positions. Col. Bartes, the Adjutant-Major of the President-General Santa Anna, demanded a surrender at discretion, calling us foreign rebels. I answered them with a cannon shot, upon which the enemy commenced a bombardment with a five inch howitzer, which ...
Historical account This legend is comparable to the Biblical war story of Jael and Sisera, found in Judges 4:1422 and repeated in poetry in Judges 5:2327. Jael's story was popular with Protestant Christians of the time and would have been familiar to slaves and freedmen as well as the white population. Historians assert that if West was with Santa Anna, it was not by her choice, nor did she play any part in deciding the battle. The seduction legend was largely unknown until the publication ...
