Milan - San Remo, AKA la Primavera, is the Italian spring classic. The season opener is known most of all for the gruelling distance (300 km/185 miles), the high speeds that are reached, the wide and smooth roads and the short climbs that make up the final bit of the course. The top of the Cipressa is the highest point of the race; after cresting the Poggio youll finish on the Via Roma in San Remo. Intensity: Medium

I bolted a handycam onto an old helmet and rode the Poggio (final hill) just prior to the 1993 edition of the Milan - San Remo bike race. The roads were closed to motorized traffic by that point in the day.
The riders arrive for the sign-in next to the Duomo (cathedral) in Milan. I've tried to identify some of the riders using annotations, just keep your cursor (mouse) near the top of the viewing screen, over the rectangle whenever it appears. Hopefully the annotations are accurate and not too annoying... complete results or the 164 race finishers can be found at tinyurl.com
After cycling up and down the Poggio (drama-inducing hill just before the finish), I positioned myself in a strategic hairpin on the descent, and waited for the 1993 race to arrive. This clip captures the TV helicopters, the anticipation amid the tifosi (cycling fans), the organizers' cars and police/media motorcycles, winner Maurizio Fondriest of the Lampre team, the peloton chasing after him,and the caravan of team cars. At the very end, I'm overtaken by packs of stragglers with improper zoom adjustment... oops.

In 2008 we saw a great victory from Fabian Cancellara (I will try and upload that one later), and in 2009 we had a photofinish between Haussler and Cavendish. Once again enjoy those last meters and even centimeters of the race. These images are from Sporza (www.sporza.be). They have great comment and again you notice that here
