The men have been trapped about 700m (2295ft) below ground since a tunnel collapse at the mine on 5 August. A custom-made capsule and winching system has been moved into position and will bring the miners up one by one. The first man out will be Florencio Avalos, 31, officials say. The last one out will be shift leader Luis Urzua. Correspondents say there is a sense of excitement on the surface, with the miners' families counting down to the rescue attempt beginning. Bolivian President Evo Morales is also expected to arrive at San Jose to greet Carlos Mamani, a Bolivian national and the only non-Chilean in the group. He is scheduled to be the fourth miner brought to the surface. www.timesofearth.com SAN JOSE MINE, Chile — Chile's mining minister says the rescue of 33 miners who have been trapped underground for more than two months will likely begin on Wednesday. Minister Laurence Golborne said Saturday that rescue teams must first reinforce a section of an escape shaft that was finally completed on Saturday. After the shaft was finished, engineers lowered a video camera inside and decided to add steal pipes to fortify a part of it. The miners will be lifted to safety one-by-one in an escape capsule. The drilling rig finally reached the miners 622 meters below ground on Saturday morning, prompting cheers and tears from rescuers and relatives above. In a drama that unfolded before television cameras from around the world, bells rang and sirens blared signaling that the escape shaft had been completed. Engineers embraced and jumped for joy. Relatives, who were staying at a nearby site called "Camp Hope", both laughed and cried. Some described the moment as "overwhelming". The miners have been trapped since part of the mine collapsed on August 5. Crews have been sending food, water, games, letters and other items to the men through small supply shafts. A team of 16 paramedics and rescue experts has been preparing to help bring the miners to the surface. Authorities say some of the team will join the miners underground to make their journey as easy as possible.

Miners trapped in Chile have two reasons to be hopeful. Firstly, the fastest drill leading the rescue effort has been repaired. Secondly, one miner has become a father, to a baby girl named Esperanza, or "hope" in Spanish. Lets take a closer look. Engineers at the San Jose mine in northern Chile have fired up the drill. After sitting for days with a broken bit, rescue workers and relatives of the 33 trapped miners breathe a sigh of relief as drilling resumes. The drill, known as Plan B, is faster than two other drills used -- but on Thursday it struck a steel beam deep underground. Thankfully, Plan B is back up and running. [Elizabeth Segovia Rojas]: "It's what we were waiting for because it's the one that moves fastest. What we wanted most was for them to hear the machines working, that they are doing all they can from above to get them out." The miners, trapped 700 meters underground, find renewed hope in the sound of the drill overhead. But for one miner, hope comes in a different form. Esperanza, which means 'hope' in Spanish, was born Tuesday to the wife of Ariel Ticona. Workers sent pictures of Ticona's 3.5 kilogram daughter via capsules, or 'doves', which have become the miners' lifeline. Maria Yanez, Ticona's mother and new grandmother: [Maria Yanez, Trapped Miner's Mother, New Grandmother]: (female, Spanish) "It's a little bit sad because my son was not present at the birth of his daughter. I would have liked him to be here, but he couldn't. He will see the video ...

33 workers trapped underground in Chile cheer as they watch their national soccer team take to the field. The players wear emblems of support for the miners. For 90 minutes, they were just another group of men watching the football. But for these 33 miners in Chile trapped 700 metres underground, it was a rare glimpse of the outside world- a friendly match between Ukraine and Chile in Kiev. A small projector had been passed down to the miners, and via fiber-optic cables they projected the game onto a wall in the mine. Above ground, families of the trapped men also watched and supported their national team. One of the miners, Franklin Lobos, is a former professional footballer who played for several Chilean sides. Chile lost the match 2-1, and afterwards Lobos discussed the side's performance with rescue workers who had also been watching. Watching the game was intended to boost morale, and it was likely further boosted when the Chilean players took to the field wearing t shirts like these- translated as "come on miners". Goalscorer Mauricio Isla said the plight of the miners was at the forefront of the players' minds. [Mauricio Isla, Chilean Soccer Player]: "Yes, we thought about it when the situation started when we arrived the first day, we thought to send them a message. It is very difficult for them to be in that situation but we thought about it because we are Chilean, we are playing for our country and the first thing in our minds is our families and the miners ...

New video footage shows trapped miners in Chile receiving food parcels and other essentials. The men are shown to be in good health, and very appreciative of all the support they are receiving. A new video shot by the trapped Chilean miners released on Wednesday shows they are clean, healthy and more confident than in last week's recording. In the five-minute video the men are seen receiving new beds, food and water supplies through a narrow shaft - their only connection to the outside world. One miner narrated the video, showing the holes where shipments, know as "palomas" or doves by the miners, arrive. The trapped miners are very grateful for the rescue efforts. [Mario Sepulveda, Trapped Miner]: "We thank you for the concern you have had with us, especially our government. The truth is that we are very proud and very happy to be Chilean and we are even more glad and proud to be miners." [Victor Segovia, Trapped Miner]: "Greetings to everyone out there. Many thanks for all your effort and for working 24/7. We are very grateful to you and we will have the patience to wait until you rescue us." Rescuers started drilling a 26-inch diameter shaft on Monday evening that will be used to evacuate the miners one at a time in a cage attached to a pulley. Health officials have sent them high-protein, high-calorie foods in narrow plastic tubes, to help them build up their strength after spending 17 days entombed before they were found alive. The miners have given priority to the ...

There's some hope for the Chilean miners who have been trapped underground for several weeks now. Rescue workers have started to drill an escape shaft, but it could take months to complete. Workers prepare to start drilling an escape shaft to rescue 33 trapped Chilean miners. The bid to rescue the miners will be extremely challenging. It could take between two to four months. The head engineer says a vertical shaft will lead straight down to the miners' shelter. [Andre Sougarret, Engineer in Charge of Rescue Operation]: "We're already making the last connections and in that way we hope to initiate this construction of the vertical shaft that's near 90 degrees, just over the shelter where the men are." The miners have been trapped since a cave-in 25 days ago. They are stuck in a hot and humid tunnel 700 meters, or 2300 feet underground. The confined space could affect their psychological health and doctors told them to move to a deeper location to reduce exposure to humidity.

With 33 Chilean miners facing months of confinement, NASA is sending a team of experts to Chile on Monday to supply the government with tips on how it keeps astronauts aboard the space station both physically and mentally fit. Dr. Michael Duncan is NASA's deputy chief medical officer. [Dr. Michael Duncan, NASA Deputy Chief Medical Officer]: "NASA has had a long experience in dealing with isolated environments, in particular currently on the space station. We train and plan contingencies for emergencies." The miners were found alive one week ago - 17 days after a cave-in at a small gold and copper mine in Chile's remote north, but it could take up to four months to dig them out. [Dr. Michael Duncan, NASA Deputy Chief Medical Officer]: "NASA is providing advice. The Chileans are very well organized. They have a lot of resources at their disposal. They have done a lot for the miners and in fact the miners have done a lot for themselves underground to show the will to survive and to organize themselves to be able to survive this long. So our plan is to go down and provide the advice that the Chileans have requested in the areas of nutritional support and behavioral health support." The 33 miners have not yet been given an exact time-frame, but have been promised they will back with their families by Christmas.
It's been more than three weeks since the miners were trapped in a mine in Chile. The authorities are planning a rescue mission. But for the families of the miners it's been a long wait.
www.timesofearth.com COPIAPO, CHILE - An Australian-made hydraulic drill has arrived at a mine in Chile where 33 men have been trapped for over three weeks. The drill will bore down more than 700 metres to attempt and rescue the trapped miners, some of whom were showing signs of depression. "We've finished building the machine's platform ... we hope between Sunday and Monday to begin drilling the shaft," Andre Sougarret, the operation's chief engineer, said on Saturday. The bore, an Australian-made Strata 950, drills at a maximum rate of 20m per day. The initial narrow shaft it will dig will have to be doubled in diameter to permit a man to pass through. Once it is fully assembled and operational, engineers said it will take up to four months of drilling to reach the trapped miners down the gold and silver mine that collapsed on August 5. Most of the miners appeared to be in good spirits in a 45-minute video they sent to their families after their three-week ordeal. But officials said that a handful of them appeared to be struggling psychologically. "Five of the miners are isolated, are not eating well and do not want to appear on camera - this is what we call depression," Jaime Manalich, the country's health minister, said. The minister said a psychiatrist would attempt to treat the men over an intercom system dropped down to hot and cramped shelter, that the miners have described as "hell". The video footage shot by the miners and broadcast in Chile late on Thursday ...
The first pictures have come of the 33 miners trapped in the land mine in Chile for the last 3 weeks. All of them are all in good health in the video they made themselves. The video was shot after the rescuers sent a camera 2300 feet down a narrow hole drilled into the underground chamber. But the rescuers say it might take weeks before the miners are brought out.

Trapped miners in Chile.
Emotions are running high throughout Chile as word comes that trapped miners are still alive. Ecstatic over the news, Chilean President Sebastian Pinera proposes improvements for work safety conditions. Chilean miners, still alive 17 days after a cave-in, were sent supplies of saline and glucose through a narrow drill hole on Monday. Rescuers now face a months-long, half-mile dig to rescue them. In what relatives call a miracle, the miners on Sunday tied a note to a perforation drill that had bored a shaft the circumference of a grapefruit to the refuge where they are sheltered, 2300 feet vertically underground. [Sebastian Pinera, Chilean President]: (male, Spanish) "I am sure that in all the homes of Chile, there were tears of happiness, of emotion, because after 17 days of being trapped and captive in the depths of the mountain which is 2300 feet deep, 33 miners - 32 of them our compatriots and one son of a neighbor country - they showed the world that not only are they alive, but much more than that - that they are united, that they are strong, that they are fighting." Pinera has sacked top officials of Chile's mining regulator and vows a major overhaul of the agency in light of the accident. [Sebastian Pinera, Chilean President]: (male, Spanish) "There will not be impunity, and I want to stress that the investigations - criminal as well as civil - have been initiated and we are going to investigate those responsible and punish those who are to blame." Mining Minister ...
