Comrade Rajesh Ranjan, an activist of AISA and CPI(ML), who passed away of a sudden cardiac arrest on the morning of 26 October 2010. Rajesh joined JNU as a student of BA Korean in 2002 and soon became active in AISA . Throughout his student days in JNU, he was actively involved in the reassertion of AISAin JNU. He was an AISA office bearer as well as the general secretary of the AISA JNU unit in 2007-08. He also contested JNUSU elections as a Councillor candidate. Rajesh was actively involved in the student movement in JNU. He was rusticated by the JNU administration in 2007 for participating in the movement for minimum wages and workers' rights in JNU. In fact, he was one of the first students in JNU who established a close rapport with workers in the campus, and got to know of the large-scale violations in workers' rights in JNU. Students as well as mess workers in Mahi hostel (where he was a resident for many years) will remember the role Rajesh played in raising their issues. Rajesh was also part of the group of students who got involved in teaching and taking classes for the children of the construction workers in our campus. Always an activist who was most serious and committed towards revolutionary politics, he remained active even after his student days as an activist of the CPI(ML). He was part of the AISA Headquarters unit in Delhi, and was also a member of CPI(ML)'s and AISA's publications team and the website unit, and was also involved in the publication ...

PUDR's follow up of the construction sites in the last two months shows that in spite of repeated court hearings and orders passed, nothing has changed for the workers. Let alone getting any pending dues, the workers are still being made to continue doing forced labour by paying them less than two-third of the minimum wages almost at every site, living conditions remained as abysmal as before, safety norms are being compromised even more with the pressure to meet deadlines and almost no action was taken by the labour department against a single contractor, or official of a construction company, or the principal employer government agencies, for illegalities committed by them.
Delhi City-wide co-ordinated demonstration around CWG: urban displacement, labor and price rise. 14th September 2010 Protestors all over delhi came out to demand that Sheila Dixit, Kalmadiji and city planners stop oppressing common peoples needs in their quest for this World Class City and the Commonwealth Games. Through the morning and afternoon of 14th September, a city wide outcry took place in 6 different places. While the protest took different forms including Chakka Jamms, and flier distribution, the thousands of angry people had ONE single banner that read 'Commonwealth kiski shaan, Janta Hai Sab Pareshaan' and a unified list of peoples' demands. Sites of protest included the Bhalaswa Highway, Raj Niwas Marg, Delhi University, Okhla Modh, Noida Modh and ITO. At one of the sites of protest, Bhalaswa Highway the police severely beat up and maltreated several of 300 protesters. Protesters at other sites also gathered in large numbers, held meetings, found traffic jammed by the CWG lanes, distributed fliers (attached) and confronted large mobs of the police. Protesters demand: 1. Stop the displacement of bastis. 2. Stop the displacement of informal sector workers from the streets. 3 Reverse the recent cancellation of tens of thousands of ration cards. 4. Pay workers minimum wage and their due rights at games construction sites. 5. Provide housing to those displaced and the homeless. 6. Take action against the trafficking of women for the games. 7. Return all the funds ...
This is a small film about the heinous attack on the workers of the Viva Global Factory, by goons hired by their management and labour contractor. Viva Global(Plot No 413, Phase III, Udyog Vihar, Gurgaon) is a major supplier of kid's and ladies garments to Marks &Spencer, one of the biggest brands in United Kingdom, which spends billions of pounds every year to publicise their commitment to the workers' who make clothes for them. After bearing blatant violation of almost all labour laws in Viva Global including non payment of minimum wages and illegal and forced termination of workers and all other kind of unfair labour practices, Viva Global workers joined Mazdoor Ekta Manch, a platform of workers in Gurgaon and subsequently Garment and Allied Workers Union(GAWU). The GAWU had informed M&S of all these violations in Viva Global and urged M&S to call a tripartite meeting to solve these outstanding issues. Even after being the major client of Viva Global, M&S denied its power to call a tripartite meeting and possibility of sustainable solution to these issues. And Viva Global slowly started terminating workers who are members of GAWU and contracted workers through P&D Company, a notorious contractor in Gurgaon. Workers have submitted their demands to the management of Viva Global, the labour department and M&S many times in the last 6 months. Viva Global started calling in armed goons to the shopfloor to threaten workers with life and physical violence. Around 45 workers ...
The Commonwealth Games, the multi-sport competitive event of the former colonies of the British Empire, is held every four years. This third largest sporting event in the world, after the Summer Olympics and the Asian Games, will be held in New Delhi from October 3rd to October 14th this year. The estimated cost of this event is around 40000 crore rupees or nearly 9 billion dollars, much of it spent on shoddy construction and corruption. But that is only the financial cost. There is also the cost to the people who live, work or study in New Delhi. In the name of beautification, more than 40 slums have been demolished. Thousands of people have been displaced by force and transferred to substandard housing in distant locations, far away from their places of work and sources of livelihood. Stadiums and other sports venues are being built by workers who are paid well below minimum wages and forced to work in hazardous environments and made to live in sub-human conditions. Among the people impacted are students of Delhi University. Evicted from their hostels to make room for renovation and the construction of sports complexes on campus, these students have organized themselves to protest not only their evictions but also to question the lack of democratic processes in the university administration and decision making and to demand fair wages for the construction workers employed on campus. Today we speak with Vasundhara Jairath, an M Phil student and a member of the University ...
