On November 14 & 21, 2009, hundreds of Rhode Islanders participated in Operation Holiday Cheer, coordinated by the Lt. Governor's Office and collected thousands of donations, including from many RI businesses, and put together 500 boxes of "holiday cheer" -- snacks, books, socks, knit hats, candy, magazines, toiletries, and messages of care and love from children in schools throughout the state -- for ri's 500 National Guard deployed in Afghanistan, Iraq and other stations overseas. The spirit of generosity and mindfulness is alive and well. We miss our women and men in active service.
