www.google.com P Analysis: Economic stress is easing more slowly By MIKE SCHNEIDER and JEANNINE AVERSA (AP) -- 4 days ago WASHINGTON — Two-thirds of US counties became economically healthier in May, thanks to more manufacturing jobs in the Midwest and fewer home foreclosures in the Sun Belt, according to The Associated Press' monthly analysis of conditions around the country. Yet the improvement appeared to slow in May compared with April, the AP's Economic Stress Index shows. And concerns are arising that the nation's recovery is losing momentum. Economic stress declined month to month in 33 states in May, aided by lower unemployment. In April, by contrast, stress had eased in every state except two — and in 90 percent of the nation's 3141 counties. Bankruptcy rates around the nation also inched up in May. The AP's Economic Stress Index calculates a score for each county and state from 1 to 100 based on unemployment, foreclosure and bankruptcy rates. A higher score indicates more economic stress. Under a rough rule of thumb, a county is considered stressed when its score exceeds 11. The AP's index found the average county's Stress score in May was 10.3, down from 10.6 in April. It was the lowest score since November's 10.2. "As the government's stimulus winds down and as long as the labor market remains weak, an acceleration in the economy is probably not in the cards," said David Huether, chief economist at the National Association of Manufacturers. "If I were a betting ...

OLBERMANN: First, as promised, a Special Comment on jobless benefits. A year ago, a heartless Missouri State Representative named Cynthia Davis lashed out against school summer breakfast programs. She didn't understand the point. Why should the government keep kids from having breakfast at home with their folks? This woman was so disconnected from privation and want and poverty that it had not occurred to her that not every child has enough food to eat. She added this insulting, demeaning postscript for the hungry children of Missouri: "tip, if you work for McDonald's, they will feed you for free during your break." As of this month, with their members in the Senate killing a temporary emergency extension of benefits to the jobless, Cynthia Davis's blinkered, belligerent, bestial attitude might as well be the official platform of the Republican party. George Will, rapidly becoming the spokesman for the year 1931, said yesterday that the Republican senators, quoting, "believe that when you subsidize something, you'll get more of it. And we're subsidizing unemployment. That is the long-term unemployment, those unemployed more than six months. Is at an all-time high. And they do not think it's stimulative, because what stimulates is the consumer and savers' sense of permanent income. Everyone knows that unemployment benefits are not permanent income." So the 1400000 Americans who will have lost their unemployment benefits by the end of this week are better off because George ...
PBS Newahour May 8, 2009 With millions of Americans losing their jobs in the current recession, African American unemployment is reaching record levels. In East St. Louis, Illinois, black unemployment is around 30 percent. Economics Correspondent Paul Solman drives the neglected streets to see how the city is coping. He finds the Tomorrow's Builders YouthBuild Charter School where students have professional construction skills, but can't find a job because nothing is being built. This video also introduces the concept of "social capital" connections between people that help them find jobs and achieve economic mobility. "You've got to know somebody. If you don't know nobody, there ain't even no use to wasting your time, because that's what the world's about these days." - Joeshawn Williams, student "You even have to get connections at McDonald's. I don't know why, but it's like that." - Antonio Rhodes, student "I wish I could make a new world in which these kids didn't sit over on the dark side of the moon practically in terms of social connection, but there it is." - Glenn Loury, Brown University
