Looks at a typical Monk Seal haul out four miles south of Lahaina on a beach adjacent to a major highway. Seal is relatively unnoticed until the NOAA people post their signs and yellow tape in a manner that is visible from the roadway. Makes the area look like a crime scene. Traffic is brought to a virtual standstill that lasts well into the evening when the seal finally leaves to go fishing. A lot of animosity is directed against the poor seal that is just trying to get some rest. The NOAA people have good intentions but don't seem to understand that they are creating the problem where one should not exist. Hawaii has just adopted a law that goes into effect July 1, 2010 that makes a "take" of an endangered species a class C felony. While a "take" does include the killing of a seal it also includes "harass, harm, or pursue." A rather opened ended list of things subject to interpretation. Interestingly, the law allows a citizen to take action "against any other person, or any state or county agency or instrumentality , that is alleged to be in violation of this chapter or any rule adopted under this chapter." Makena State Park allowing Feral cats with Taxoplasmosis know to be lethal to Monk Seals should be a good early test of the statute. How about the developer that wipes out the habitat for numerous endangered species by grinding up the surface to a depth of a few feet.

Hawaiian monk seals are highly endangered. There are only about 1000 left in the world. Many become entangled in fish nets and drown. As fish populations decline, monk seals have less food to eat. Many seals are starving to death. The fearsome Tiger Shark is a predator and feeds on monk seal pups. Young females pups are "mobbed" by large male seals and are accidentally killed. Monk seals have been brutally attacked by ignorant fishermen who believe the seals are eating all the fish. It is truly sad that a prehistoric species, the Hawaiian Monk Seal, is now facing total extinction in our lifetime. This video shows a baby monk rolling into the sea after a day of sun bathing on the beach. Monk seals feed all night, and sleep all day. What a life. Koki the monk seal is forty days old on November 18, 2009. Koki and Mom have taken up residence at the fish pond about 1/2 mile from Koki Beach where Koki was born. Each day we see mom teaching Koki the fundamentals of survival for a monk seal. Today it looks like "fish catching 101" has paid off. Koki is seen chewing on what could be a fish or some other marine creature. An important step in becoming a free living monk seal.

This is the first in a series of short clips about a monk seal named Koki born October 9, 2009 on Koki Beach, Hana Maui. This was taken when the pup was ten days old. Every five days I was able to get additional video on it development. The mother RO 15 stayed with the pup 51 days nursing and training the pup for survival.
