All ABOARD the historic 1880 train running ten miles between Hill City and Keystone, South Dakota. This railroad line was originally built as a mining railroad for gold in the Black Hills. It reached Keystone on January 20, 1900 and was later used to haul equipment for carving nearby Mount Rushmore. The Baldwin 2-6-2T #104 locomotive and train cars and have been featured on television shows, such as the Gunsmoke episode "Snow Train", General Hospital, and the TNT mini-series, Into the West. Vonnie and I both agreed that we would never have made a special trip up here to view Mt Rushmore but since it is on our way home....what the hell. Along our drive through South Dakota we are definitely aware that we are heading toward Sturgis where the huge biker rally occurs every year. This year being their 70th anniversary. Bikers are everywhere and the event doesn't even start for another week. Lots of big rigs and tour buses pulling trailers full of bikes down the highway. We were told by locals that the airport fills with private jets that have bikes shipped in for this event! I was told the event normally will draw 1/2 a million visitors. There is talk that they are expecting close to 700000 heads for this one! Anyway....lots of bikes on the road here. On our way through the state we took the scenic route through the Badlands National Park. We just wanted to see some stuff but not do any hikes. It was cool to check out but after seeing Zion in Utah we weren't overly excited. It was some odd and rugged looking landscape though. There are lots of trails and caves to explore around here. In this episode I screen my critically acclaimed student film-- REMEMBER RUSHMORE (How to Get to Galapagos from the Heartland)-- at the very place it was shot, Mount Rushmore... well not exactly. I shot it in Mount Rushmore National Park; I screen it in Mount Rushmore National Park Parking Ramp, Level 3. My film was an official short film submission at Sundance Film Festival. Robert Redford rejected it himself.

Gerard Baker is the first Indian superintendent for the National Park Service at Mount Rushmore. He talks about his family and growing up in a four room log house, and the culture he brings to his work. One of his goals within the National Park Service is to get people more involved. He wants to open up the doors of the National Park system to many different cultures and partnerships. He talks about the partnership with Western Dakota Technical College for the Plus 50 Initiative. At a time when fewer Americans are visiting national parks, he views a partnership like this one, which brings people into the parks and trains them in how to share about them, as a vital one. As part of the program, plus 50 students visit national parks and learn how to share the stories of these important cultural and historic sites. He smiles when talking about how the program helps educate people who are age 50 and up, like himself, who want to learn more or work later in life. It is challenging to talk about and learn about the history of the Black Hills, notes Baker, because of the pain and tragedy that these sites represent for the Indian people. He talks about the challenges he has faced in taking on a leadership role within the National Park Service, and efforts to build multicultural understanding and introduce an Indian perspective to how national park sites are interpreted.
