The New York Times is reporting today what RT America reported months ago: The motives behind Pakistani officials helping the CIA in the capture of Abdul Ghani Baradar, the second-ranking Taliban leader, were to shut down peace talks with Baradar and the Afghan government. James Hanson, who originally discussed this topic in February, returns tonight to talk about the new developments from this story.
The New York Times front page today has a story about Pakistani officials admitting that the capture of a high ranked Taliban operative was a deliberate attempt to blow up negotiations between the Afghan Government and the Taliban. RT reported about it back in February with our guest Jim Hanson, MSG Ret. Why are The New York Times 6 months late and why is Pakistan leaking this information?

More than 180 files detail accusations that the ISI spy agency has supplied, armed and trained insurgents since 2004. More than 180 intelligence files in the war logs, most of which cannot be confirmed, detail accusations that Pakistan's premier spy agency has been supplying, arming and training the insurgency since at least 2004. The Obama administration, which gives $1bn a year in military aid to Pakistan, did not challenge the veracity of the files, but said that while Islamabad was making progress against extremism, "the status quo is not acceptable". "The safe havens for violent extremist groups within Pakistan continue to pose an intolerable threat to the United States, to Afghanistan, and to the Pakistani people," a spokesman said in response to questions about the ISI files. He urged Pakistan's military and intelligence services to "continue their strategic shift against violent extremists groups within their borders, and stay on the offensive against them". An ISI spokesman said the agency could not comment in detail until it had examined the files, but described the general allegations as "far-fetched and unsubstantiated". The accusations against the ISI in the war logs range from spectacular to lurid. Reports describe covert ISI plots to train legions of suicide bombers, smuggle surface-to-air missiles into Afghanistan, assassinate President Hamid Karzai and poison western beer supplies. But despite the startling allegations the files yield little convincing ...
The Taliban's "plastic bombs" -- the low metal content improvised explosive devices (IEDS) that kill the majority of American and British soldiers who die in Afghanistan -- were introduced to the Taliban by Pakistani officials, according to Taliban commanders, the Taliban intermediary and western officials. Far from being the work of rogue elements, interviews suggest this "support is official ISI policy", he said. "The report is consistent with Pakistan's political history in which civilian leaders actively backed 'jihadi' groups that operate in Afghanistan and Kashmir," Waldman said. Pakistani support for the Taliban is prolonging a conflict that has cost the West billions of dollars and hundreds of lives, the report said, noting that last week 32 NATO soldiers were killed. The LSE report, based on dozens of interviews and corroborated by two senior western security officials, stated: "As the provider of sanctuary and substantial financial, military and logistical support to the insurgency, the ISI appears to have strong strategic and operational influence -- reinforced by coercion. "There is thus a strong case that the ISI orchestrates, sustains and shapes the overall insurgent campaign." Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, the Taliban's former second in command, was arrested by the ISI earlier this year with seven other Taliban leaders. The Pakistani army has allegedly committed hundreds of retaliatory killings and other ongoing human rights abuses in the Swat Valley since the end of its successful anti-Taliban offensive there in September.
US officials believe that even as Pakistan's security forces worked with their American counterparts to detain Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar and other insurgents, the country's Inter-Services Intelligence directorate, or ISI, quietly freed at least two senior Afghan Taliban figures it had captured on its own. US military and intelligence officials say the releases, detected by American spy agencies but not publicly disclosed, are evidence that parts of Pakistan's security establishment continue to support the Afghan Taliban.

An American member of Al-Qaida was picked up in a raid in Pakistan's southern city of Karachi, Pakistani officials said Monday. They identified the suspect as Abu Yahya Majadin Adam, but gave no details on his background, or role within al-Qaida. The name is very close to that listed on the FBI's Web site as an alias for Adam Gadahn, the 31 year-old spokesman who has appeared in several videos threatening the West since 2001. The resemblance led to confusion among officials Sunday to believe that the suspect was Gadahn, according to a senior intelligence officer. "The resemblance of the name initially caused confusion but now they have concluded he is not Gadahn," said an intelligence officer, who like all Pakistani intelligence agents does not allow his name to be used. Adam said, "He feels proud to be a member of al-Qaida." US Embassy spokesman Rick Snelsire said the embassy had not been informed of any American being arrested. On Sunday, two intelligence officers and a senior government official identified the detained man as Gadahn and said he was arrested in recent days. They too spoke on condition of anonymity. The government official said his name could not be used because of the sensitivity of the information. None of those officials were available for comment Monday. US Defense, intelligence and law enforcement officials could not verify Sunday that Gadahn was the one detained. Pakistan is under intense US pressure to arrest al-Qaida and Taliban leaders living on ...
On je zarobljen u pakistanskom gradu Karachiju u zajedničkoj operaciji američkih i pakistanskih agenata. Njegovo hapšenje se ocjenjuje kao najznačajniji dogadjaj u osmogodišnjem afganistanskom ratovanju i kao moguća promjena pakistanske strategije.
Pakistani officials say they have captured at least seven senior members of the Afghan Taliban hiding in Pakistan. The militants are known to have been hiding in the Pakistani city of Quetta near the Afghan border and are known as members of the "Quetta Shura". The biggest catch was Mullah (Abdul Ghani) Baradar, the Afghan Taliban's top military commander. He was captured in the Pakistani city of Karachi in a joint operation of US and Pakistani agents. VOA's Ravi Khanna spoke to experts about what the arrests mean for Pakistan-US relations and President Obama's new strategy for Afghanistan.
