What is it about mummies? These preserved human time capsules from ancient Egypt fascinate and intrigue us, but why? Is it because they blur the line between the living and the dead? Or is it because they provide such a powerfully visual window to our ancient past? Rated G. This film is a 3D version of the previously released Mummies: Secrets of the Pharaohs.
Curator Lawrence Berman interprets the funerary spells painted in hieroglyphics on an extraordinary wooden coffin. Found in the tomb of Djehutynakht, a Middle Kingdom dignitary, the elaborately painted coffin is on view at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, through May 16, 2010, along with a mummified head, miniature boats, and other mysteries of the afterlife in The Secrets of Tomb 10A: Egypt 2000 BC.
A film about the sensational discovery of a 3000 year old female mummy by the German Egyptologist Professor Erhart Graefe on his excavation site in West Thebes near Luxor in Egypt. How did the women of ancient Egypt live and work? And how do they compare to the women of today? They all had occupations and jobs, they wore make-up and jewelry, could become royal, almost treated as equally as men, could even obtain a divorce and were very concerned about their appearance. Like the woman today. Witness the vivid images taken in search for authentic evidence about the life of women in ancient Egypt. From the majestic Amun temple in Karnak to deep inside the narrow Tombs of the Nobles and the magnificent temple of Pharaoh Queen Hatshepsut. A exact 3D reconstruction of the mortuary temple of Padihorresnet where the mummy was discovered. Its scientific examination, using modern computer tomographic technology, revealed a number of interesting details of her life 3000 years ago.

A 2500-year-old priest named Irethorrou will be teaching anatomy to all comers in an exhibition that began Oct. 31. The mummified remains of this onetime inhabitant of a Middle Egyptian city will be on display in his coffin at the Legion of Honor in San Francisco, along with a reconstruct. ion of Irethorrous head. The reconstruction is based on determinations of his bone structure that were part of an intensive series of state-of-the-art scans conducted in August by Stanford University School of Medicine radiologists, processed into a visual format by Stanford information technologists, and interpreted by an Egyptologist with a penchant for mummies from the town of Akhmim, the spot in ancient central Egypt where Irethorrou was found. In the video Dr Zahi Hawass is examining an Old Kingdom mummy found quite by accident in a tomb at Saqqara. Dr Hawass explains the mummification process and why each stage was carried out, as well as why the heart was left inside the body.
( heritage-key.com ) Animals were deeply sacred in ancient Egypt, particularly from the 26th dynasty around 700 BC until the end of Egyptian civilization and the advent of Christianity by 400 AD. They were believed to be the living embodiment of gods, so preserving their corpses after death became a matter of the utmost importance. As Dr Ikram explains, Egyptian embalmers would go to painstaking and expensive lengths to mummify everything, from ibis to cows, mice and fish. Cats had particularly high status in Egyptian society, while mummified dogs have been found by the thousands. Even lowly scarab beetles were carefully preserved.

The excavating egypt exhibition, is running through June 14, 2009 at the Univ. of Ky Art Museum in the Singletary Center in Lexington highlights the work of the father of modern archaeology, William Matthew Flinders Petrie (1853-1942). Many believe the Indiana Jones movies are based on Petrie's work. If so, he was the real McCoy. Hundreds of artifacts are on display including a mummy cartonnage case wrapping, a sarcophagus or outer coffin, jewelry, pottery, a sheet from the book of the dead with a double curse written on papyrus, artwork, the oldest known beaded dress on earth, and scores of other ancient objects. These are the artifacts of the ancesters of the people who the Hebrew prophet, Moses, interacted with. For museum hours and ticket prices, call 859-257-5716 through June 14 or visit www.JKLM.us and search on the term "egyptian."

They represent Greek settlers in Egypt (another lie). I say this because 80% of the faces are SOOOO Egyptian. You see a person who resembles one of these faces in an Airport in mid-west United States, and you would immediately approach them and start a conversation with him or her starting with "Where from Egypt are you?" and he will turn out an Egyptian with no exception! The dental morphology of the Roman-period Faiyum mummies was also compared with that of earlier Egyptian populations, and was found to be "much more closely akin" to that of dynastic Egyptians than to Greeks or other European populations. According to Walker (2000), "CAT scans of all the complete mummies represented reveal a correspondence of age and, in suitable cases, sex between mummy and image, confirming that the paintings were made at the time of death. In addition, some portraits were painted directly onto the coffin; for example, on a shroud or another part. Together with the surviving frescoes and objects from Pompeii and Herculaneum, and tomb frescoes in Macedonia, they are the best preserved paintings from ancient times and are renowned for their remarkable naturalism. So why are they not famous and why are these relentless efforts to suggest that they are Greek and not Egyptian although they are found in Fayum, an Oasis in the Western Desert, some 350 kms south of Alexandria?! Martin Bernal thinks that there is a sort of collective conspiracy when it comes to defining the contribution and ...
A browse through the mummies in the worlds museums, and Cairo museum's mummy catalog. Includes one Nubian prince (Maiherpri), and one possibly Asiatic mummy, Tiye's father Yuya. Ramses and many others have hennaed red hair, a common trick to cover ageing grey hair or to enhance brown hair. Mainly the hair is naturally dark brown to black Caucasian hair with the occasional naturally fair and auburn sample (Ramses was auburn in his youth as was his father) and was well preserved by the stable climate condtions in the tombs. Specimens buried in sand may have had their hair lightened (Ginger). Many of the mummies are wearing hair weaves, and the bald headed mummies would probably have worn ornate wigs when alive. Human skin only ever darkens after death (skin turns black from decomposition), so a guide to the in-life skin tone is to pick the lightest and therefore least decayed patch on the mummy.
