You see a person who resembles one of these faces in an Airport in mid-west United States, and you would immediately approach them and start a conversation with him or her starting with "Where from Egypt are you?" and he will turn out an Egyptian with no exception! The dental morphology of the Roman-period Faiyum mummies was also compared with that of earlier Egyptian populations, and was found to be "much more closely akin" to that of dynastic Egyptians than to Greeks or other European populations. According to Walker (2000), "CAT scans of all the complete mummies represented reveal a correspondence of age and, in suitable cases, sex between mummy and image, confirming that the paintings were made at the time of death. In addition, some portraits were painted directly onto the coffin; for example, on a shroud or another part. Together with the surviving frescoes and objects from Pompeii and Herculaneum, and tomb frescoes in Macedonia, they are the best preserved paintings from ancient times and are renowned for their remarkable naturalism. So why are they not famous and why are these relentless efforts to suggest that they are Greek and not Egyptian although they are found in Fayum, an Oasis in the Western Desert, some 350 kms south of Alexandria?! A browse through the mummies in the worlds museums, and Cairo museum's mummy catalog. Includes one Nubian prince (Maiherpri), and one possibly Asiatic mummy, Tiye's father Yuya. Ramses and many others have hennaed red hair, a common trick to cover ageing grey hair or to enhance brown hair. Mainly the hair is naturally dark brown to black Caucasian hair with the occasional naturally fair and auburn sample (Ramses was auburn in his youth as was his father) and was well preserved by the stable climate condtions in the tombs. Specimens buried in sand may have had their hair lightened (Ginger). Many of the mummies are wearing hair weaves, and the bald headed mummies would probably have worn ornate wigs when alive. Human skin only ever darkens after death (skin turns black from decomposition), so a guide to the in-life skin tone is to pick the lightest and therefore least decayed patch on the mummy.
