Most of you will remember Kim Basinger sensuously slinking to this one-hit wonder in "My Stepmother Is An Alien". Despite being a one-off collab for 4th & Broadway, M|A|R|R|S provided a link between the retro sound of soulful & groovy London House and the sample-heavy nature of much of the Chicago House-inspired US Dance music of the late 80s. "Pump Up The Volume" consists of about 250 samples, the song title itself derives from Eric B. & Rakim's "I Know You Got Soul", thus heralding the gradual absorption of the Hip-Hop aesthetic into Dance and ultimately (Euro) House music. This radio edit, however, was intentionally beefed up with high-energy drop-ins, breaks, scratches & Acid House accents so that it would appeal to an even wider crowd, a crowd that has grown so large over the years that "Pump Up..." has since been reissued over 10 times internationally. As such it remains a watershed in the history not only of sampling but in that of the House music genre altogether. Brothas & sistas, put the needle on it!
