Since its founding, Sorenson Communications has worked hard to give back to the deaf and interpreter communities. Sorenson created the first videophone designed especially for the deaf and then offered the highest-quality Video Relay Service (VRS). In recent years, Sorenson has provided Sorenson customers with enhanced or extra "Gold Services." You are probably aware of these products and services, but did you know that Sorenson also makes significant contributions to deaf communities in many, many other ways? In the past, Sorenson has provided financial support to local and national deaf community and deaf advocacy organizations across the United States. These include clubs like the Toledo Deaf Senior Citizens, The National Association of the Deaf (NAD), TDI, Deaf Seniors of America and many others. Sorenson also supports deaf students in learning and fun. Additionally, Sorenson is also committed to interpreter training. These programs are just a few of many initiatives Sorenson has put in place to give back to the people we serve. Sorenson will continue to look for new and better ways to support you, our deaf customers.
Talented Interpreters and SSPs with a strong conference background are invited to apply to be on the conference interpreting team at the NAD 50th Biennial Conference. Giving back to our community inspires us. If interested in learning about the application process, please email us at mail@ainterpreting.com.
AFA urges NAD to wake up their action: The reason we are vying for your attention to our concerns is that we, as members of the Deaf Community, are disappointed in the weakness of your actions as they pertain to supporting ASL and the human rights of Deaf people. Comment at my blog, www.adreanaline.com Translation: Hello, I'm Adrean Clark. This vlog is about the possibility of having a hearing CEO for NAD. About a week ago, Jamie Berke wrote a blog post at About.com Deafness. She said, since Gallaudet has a deaf president, why not turn things around and have a hearing CEO for NAD? My reaction was a strong NO! I've had a week to think about why I reacted. NAD is an advocacy organization. The organization wants to see Deaf people succeed, to show that Deaf people can do many things. If NAD hires a hearing CEO, it shows Deaf people can't. Some people might say but but but a hearing person can sign, has experience, etc. Still, that person is hearing. NAD's credibility will be shot. The deadline for applications is coming up on March 1st. I didn't want to sit and say nothing, only to see the candidates be all hearing, or a decision made because someone didn't say anything. So I'm warning NAD, it's important that an organization serving deaf people also hire deaf people. We want to show the best -- to put our "best face forward," so to sign. It's important. We never know who's watching, who's getting a message. Especially kids, they're very receptive to subliminal messages. Please make sure the next CEO of NAD is Deaf, that s/he signs fluently above and beyond. The guidelines on the NAD website are good, legally credible, but as for the committee who decides the final hire -- please choose the person who best represents NAD and the deaf ...

Rough Transcript: After I shared my concerns about NAD, I was amazing to witness people trying to oppress my freedom of speech, and their wildly assumptions about why did I make vlogs about NAD, what was my hidden agenda, my revenge to the NAD President, and I would use DeafRead as my weapon. HUH! What? Hilarious! There is nothing about hidden Agenda. I spoke out because NAD and the Deaf community including Deaf lawyers need to wake up and to see the truth that many of them are trying to sweep issues under the rug. There are some serious issues that we must address. They need to get out of comfort zone. NAD is being misdirected by using a disability model. NAD need to change on their priorities and to refocus on language accessibility and civil rights of ASL-Deaf people. They need to focus on creating a law for Deaf people and language accessibility. Most of Board staff members have a degree in "rehabilitating". None of them are specialized in ASL and Deaf studies as cultural model. Chief Operating Officer's daughter is attending Cued Speech program. He should have worked at Cued speech organization instead. He obviously is not a supporter of Bilingual education of ASL and English if he sends his daughter to Cued Speech program. What kind the message that NAD is trying to send? There is also a staff member stated in her bio that it was Deaf Studies. I got a feeling that there was more to it so I researched more further and found it was the Department of audiology, speech ...
Carl Schroeder discusses the 40-year span of the National Association of the Deaf (NAD), starting with the distribution of the Signing Exact English (SEE) books in 1970's to bashing The Bicultural Center (TBC) in 1990's. Today the NAD remains silent about deaf hate crime causing discrimination, oppression, ignorance, and, more current, homophobia; erratic educational interpreting (ie, one IEP = one interpreter, not 7 IEPs = 2 interpreters, etc.) that bankrupts deaf education; cochlear implants that are "cosmetic", not medical, and so forth.
While NAD is discussed right now, let me discuss the leadership and Deaf people Sociology in Deaf Communities Leaders and Deaf People
This vlog obviously focuses on National Association of the Deaf! Cheers, R-
Comment at www.adreanaline.com Translation: This is a proposal for NAD to consider, but other organizations can look at it as well. In today's digital age, information is offered for free on the internet. This creates high volumes of traffic, and high distribution of information. If a website decides to close off their content behind a pay wall, their traffic decreases to the few who are willing to pay for the membership. Likewise for NAD -- the paid membership decreases the number of their consumers. If NAD opened up their membership to everyone, they'd be able to grab hold on a larger audience. Some people might be concerned that this means hearing people would take control. Actually there are two reasons why I doubt this would happen. First, the NAD Bylaws do not state that members must have a hearing loss. That would have given opportunity for hearing people to take over, but it didn't happen - which brings us to reason two. The NAD conferences are expensive affairs that deaf people travel to and socialize at. The conference is where the power happens -- where the votes take place. What benefit would there be for a hearing non-signer? Hence it remains in deaf hands.
In the closing, I wanted to share an inspiring story about Women's Ski Jumpers. They use aa proactive approach the International Olympic Committee to demand them by adding a game, woman's ski jumping to the Olympic. The international Olympic refused adding the game because they felt that it is too dangerous for women to do ski jumping or else they will lose their ovaries if they do the ski jumping. The doctors would give out the misleading information about women's medical issue if they go on ski jumping. It reminds me of Doctors would tell the misleading negative information to people especially with parents about Deaf people and American Sign Language. These committee would change the story again and they said that it was because there were not enough women to do the ski jumping. These amazing Women refused to give up and to fight for their right to get in and bring the issues of IOC in public. These women will have a fundraising, "FIGHT TO FLIGHT" to earn the money to pay the lawyers and expenses to get IOC to change the rule and policy for women. The ticket's cost was $200. They were on the ESPN to discuss in front of the mass audience. They also did the documentary film as well. These women are being outspoken because They want to make some changes. It is same thing with Deaf people who speak up their concerns about NAD's direction because THEY WANT TO MAKE SOME CHANGES. Bashing Labelers would try to silence people by telling them that they are bashing at NAD. It is ...
What does Rehabilitation mean? DeafASLVlogs discusses how the section 504 of rehabilitation of 1974 that made a big impact on the services that focuses on curing/rehabilitating Deaf people. Where is the law for the linguistic birthright of Deaf people? None! Deaf people who use American Sign Language has no legal right for accessing a natural language. Shockingly, I just learned that there is no legal mandate for advertisers and promoters use captioning on commercials and NAD would use their time to work with CBS and to ensure that all commercials have closed caption. It is more than 20 years that there is no law for legal mandate for closed caption on all the media including movie, tv shows, web video, DVD, and etc.. I feel that NAD should have use their time to get closed captioning on all movies, commercials, and tv shows and web videos mandated in the bill and get it passed in order to make it a law. This world is not disney. Businesses would find a way to get around and not to put closed caption. It is best interest if we put into the law. NAD would fine media people for not following the law. THese money will go to NAD, education, employment, and etc... NAD can focus on other very important issues in the Deaf community. Time's running out. We will running on the wheel and we will see same result over and over. We can't do that. We must do something. Cut the BS. They're taking too much our time. Enough! Make a law such as a Language Accessibility Act of 2010 that ...
Open ASL Vlog to NAD Board members, NAD staff and the Deaf community. Disability means people cant work or function in daily life because of their physical or mental impairment. Deaf people who are deaf can work. Deaf people who are deaf can function in life activities. Is ADA Law right for Deaf people? Deaf people are capable of working and functioning daily life even though they are deaf. The main reason Deaf people experience job discrimination is because attitudes of ignorance people. Many hiring managers think that Deaf people are actually disabled people who cant work or cant function in daily life. Deaf people are in linguistic minority. What we need is a Language Accessibility. Deaf people who are deaf are capable of working and carrying on normal pursuits and daily life activities. Right?
Most of us would like to know what is your next move.....
NAD wrote the letter template for Deaf people to copy on their letter and send them to the representative. However, unfortunately — NAD would use these degrading terms, disability such as hearing disabilities and I am a person with a disability. NAD staff members know better to use Deaf instead the disability. NAD is the one of organization that works very close with the Deaf community and yet they don't hear us and they don't respect us enough to use the term, Deaf... instead these degrading terms that define us as "EAR-Broken Beings". A egg represents the Deaf community. My head represents NAD. When I smashed the egg onto my face and still the egg would not get through my head. Just like our voices are not getting through NADs head! www.coataccess.org *Important Note from DeafASLVlogs* Please write to your representative and to tell them to support HR. 3101. You can write I am Deaf instead I am a person with a disability. www.nad.org
Why did NAD invest their energy and ensure that all the commercials for Super Bowl to have closed captioning? Its the LAW centers responsibility, not the presidents, the boards or director s responsibility at NAD? Telecommunication Act of 1996 already passed that the commercials and TV shows are required to use closed caption or subtitles. Most of the commercials are from profits-companies. So it is really Law centers responsibility to make sure that the commercial makers follow the LAW! The president, director, and the board at the NAD should have invested their energy into employment, economic, education, and audism/linguicism. The Major issue in the Deaf community is economic. The Deaf community had has been in a economic crisis for a very long time. The Deaf community really co-depends on Government for the money. The Deaf community and NAD are DEADLY BROKE. I would grade NAD an F for the marketing. Im amazing to see former presidents and current president at NAD who are also business people and yet The Deaf community and NAD are deadly BROKE! NAD did a great job for helping Super Bowl to become RICHER and Deaf community and NAD to become POORER! After all. NAD should have made a commercial about NAD for Super Bowl event. NAD and states of association would have worked together to do the fundraising. Super Bowl will be here every year. FIND A WAY! NAD should have invested their time by finding money for reaching mass members all over the nation and the world. Thats ...
The Junior NAD Conference was held in Austin, Texas at the Texas School for the Deaf, Nov. 4-7. Over 93 students from 31 different schools, participated, along with 43 staff. Eight presenters enriched the students with the stories of their professional experiences. CSD of Texas Kent Kennedy presented on his experiences between the Texas Association for the Deaf (TAD) and National Association of the Deaf (NAD). Sharing the TAD accomplishments we had during 1991-1995 and NAD accomplishments during 1998-2003. The challenges Kennedy highlighted were a lack of interpreters, over 100000 people on Social Security Insurance, closing of deaf schools and the impact of cochlear implants. I enjoyed presenting at the workshop. I would do it again in the near future, because we need to keep carrying our deaf heritage to them, said Kennedy. These are our future deaf leaders. They are all precious to us. Kennedy also noted that being involved in organizations like TAD and the NAD are real-life experiences, and not something you can take a course on. He said being around human beings helps develop respect for others as well.

Now Ben Soukup, CDS of 26 years/ veteran Deaf-rights advocate, William Johnston, Supt of St. Mary's School and Alan Hurwitz, President of NTID and will be the President of Gallaudet University are being favoritists to each other. This is behind the backs of those of us in the Deaf Community. Believe it or not Ben, Alan, and William are on the side of AG Bell. In this sense they support SEE over ASL. Therefore, in the GU Board of Trustees are members who are supporting SEE and *not* supporting ASL. I don't understand this anymore. So, why do Gallaudet University go along with NAD in the first place meanwhile they approved the guideline book of SEE since 1972? Now I am asking where is the ethics in this?

This vlog talks about the 'phone authentication' to verify accountholders via craigslist.org which denied Deaf individuals from using the craigslist.org to sell, pay, access and communicate. The only option is via the text but what about Deaf people who do not own pagers? They're doomed and prevented from using craigslist.org like these hearies do! If NAD wants nor needs the visibility, do something to trash Craigslist.org will bring a lot of visibility, I can promise you on that! R- R-
Ella reflects on one part of Fred Weiner's talk at DCARA's Deaf Community Center on Saturday, June 20, when comparison between AGBell and NAD was discussed. Topics compared include 2007 revenues, percentages of Deaf membership and missions. Also, the most important point made in Ella's opinion is the important need for Deaf people to participate in Think Tanks to develop strategies by exchanging information and perspectives.
A discussion/demand vlog: Carl Schroeder demands full and complete explanation and apology from the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) for deliberately disrupting what George Veditz had called "the noblest gift" of our beautiful language, American Sign Language in the 1970s. We the Deaf are still suffering what I dub as a language loss. The NAD owes our American society a sincere apology for abetting language bigotry and oppression since the early 1970s.

Julie Bourne & Sean Gerlis, Region 1 Board Representatives of National Association of the Deaf (NAD). NAD is very saddened to learn that the Governor in the state of Pennsylvania is in the process of making major decisions regarding Scranton State School of the Deaf for the upcoming budget year with minimal input from the deaf community. PSAD has been working through this process. Numerous other Pennsylvanian deaf organizations and groups within Pennsylvania have been doing the same. We applaud their efforts! This issue is very important to NAD. Please check NAD President Bobbie Beths vlog as she discusses how NAD views the budget threats to schools for the deaf at blogs.nad.org To PSAD: once you reach a decision of how to approach this issue, it will be time to build a coalition of deaf and professional organizations throughout state of PA to address this unfortunate situation. With a unified purpose and plan, deaf people in Pennsylvania can achieve great things. PSAD is the ideal organization to take the lead on this. It's very important for each organization and each deaf individual in state of PA to establish a common goal and form a coalition to preserve, protect, and promote the human, civil, and linguistic rights for deaf children in PA. If PSAD leadership requires ideas or information to navigate through this challenging time, please contact Julie and me. We will continue to monitor this closely. We are here for you!

No one blame either NAD or Deaf Community but both are blamed for causing so weak due to not knowing or paying attention to your valuable politics. In 1880, the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) was established by deaf leaders who believed in the right of the American deaf community to use sign language, to congregate on issues important to them, and to have its interests represented at the national level. These beliefs remain true to this day, with American Sign Language (ASL) as a core value. Please visit www.nad.org to learn more.

Explained about why AG Bell sent letter to PepsiCo by making them look better than the Deaf Community and NAD (National Association of the Deaf). Shared about my life experience of how I was treated to use Spoken language and wearing hearing aid by hearing others what they say. All my life, I've always misunderstood what they say everytime I repeat the words what they said. I thought it was mine and Deaf people's fault that they failed to do that. No, it's not Deaf people and my fault at all. It's the Speech and Hearing School that was supported under AG Bell's fault as well as other speech therapists. ASL is a language that's being used throughout in the United States and the world. All Deaf have succeeded using ASL through Deaf schools and graduated with Bachelor, Master and Ph. D's degrees through Gallaudet University and any other universities. I have met other Oral Deaf people as they are not perfect either because they could not speak or hear very well even they misunderstood a lot when they don't want to admit it. AG Bell need to leave Deaf people and Deaf Community alone.
