Rob Bishop (UT-01) visits ATKs facility located in Promontory, Utah. ATK is among those likely to be hardest hit by President Obama's cancellation of the Constellation program and Ares rocket, NASA's program to develop the Space Shuttles successor. ATK is the prime contractor to design, develop, and produce the first-stage propulsion system for the Ares Crew Launch Vehicle. It is estimated that over 2000 Utahns employed by ATK will be negatively affected by the Presidents cancellation of Constellation. In addition to reducing the industrial base, the Presidents decision will drastically harm the USs national security and missile defense capabilities.
In just a matter of minutes, two Russian cosmonauts and an American astronaut will blast off for the International Space Station. The Soyuz rocket is standing by at the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. With me in the studio is space expert Yury Karash who can talk us through the launch, and our correspondent Egor Piskunov is in Baikonur.

February 2, 2010 Astronaut Gene Cernan weighs in on Obama eliminating funds for manned lunar missions. Follow UFO Report on Twitter @ twitter.com Barack Obama to drop Nasa moon mission in budget cutbacks Reports say planned human flights to the moon and Mars likely to be ditched in effort to rein in US deficit Sam Jones and agencies guardian.co.uk, Monday 1 February 2010 - www.guardian.co.uk Nasa's plans to send a manned mission to the moon and launch the US into a bold new era of space exploration are likely to remain on the ground today when Barack Obama unveils his budget. The president wants to cut back or abandon 120 government programmes to help rein in the US deficit among them the funding of the US space administration as part of the $3.8tn (£2.4tn) budget. According to the Washington Post, Obama will seek to shelve the $81bn Constellation programme, which called for a return to the moon by 2020 and human landings on Mars by the middle of the century. The plans were laid out by his predecessor, George Bush, in 2004. The budget could also spell the end for Nasa's successor to the space shuttle, the Ares 1 rocket, which has already cost billions of dollars to develop. The government will instead call for $6bn to be spent over five years to develop a commercial craft to transport astronauts into orbit. Such a move would mark a sea change in how Nasa works, forcing it to rely on a private company to design and manufacture a spacecraft. Michael Griffin, a former Nasa ...

ATK's Jim Halsell tells Miles O'Brien about the Ares IX flight and about some interesting video of the booster splashdown in the ocean. The live interview took place live on Spaceflight Now.com the day Atlantis launched on its STS 129 mission.
While the Ares IX was technically a success, there was a bit of damage to both the pad and solid rocket booster. ?According to nasaspaceflight.com's L2 section the vehicle actually was supposed to launch at a bit of an angle to help it clear the Fixed Service Structure or FSS. ?The known downside of this was a couple of seconds of the massively hot Ares first stage exhaust hitting the FSS. ?While we were speculating about the apparent angle at liftoff during our live coverage, that was in fact planned but did damage pad 39B in the process. nasaspaceflight.com L2 Resources: Ares IX SRB additional pictures of damage - forum.nasaspaceflight.com Launch Complex 39B additional pictures of damage - forum.nasaspaceflight.com Underwater SRB pictures - forum.nasaspaceflight.com

I was watching all day today and yesterday (when it unfortunately didn't launch due to weather constraints), waiting to record the launch. Well, they got a shot at launching it at 1530GMT and the launch was just awesome. This video is footage from several camera's. The first part is the live portion, and the two segments after were shown during the replays. Enjoy!
