Larry Pearson, a two-time Nationwide Series champion, spun his car into the turn 2 wall after what looked like a flat tire on lap 30 of the 35 lap event. His car then slid down the track and was T-boned directly in the driver's side by Charlie Glotzbach. It was a massive hit that left the television announcers speechless and Pearson with several broken bones, though no life-threatening injuries. After being airlifted to Bristol Regional Medical Center, Pearson was diagnosed with a compound fracture of his left ankle that required surgery Saturday evening, a fracture of his pelvis and a fractured right hand.

In a race where some of NASCAR's best legends from the past got the chance to race against eachother one last time in Hooter's pro cup cars, this nasty wreck occured. clip from ESPN2 NASCAR.COM BRISTOL, Tenn. -- Drivers Larry Pearson and Charlie Glotzbach, both injured when Glotzbach's car T-boned Pearson's during Saturday's Showdown legends charity race at Bristol Motor Speedway, remained hospitalized Sunday at Bristol Regional Medical Center. Pearson is listed in fair condition after surgery Saturday night to repair a compound fracture of his lower left ankle. Pearson's family said, "Larry is very sore, but stable." They added that he "came out of surgery OK," but confirmed Pearson will need to undergo additional surgery on his fractured hip at a later time. He also suffered a fractured right wrist in the accident. Pearson is likely to remain in the hospital at least one more day, according to a news release issued Sunday afternoon by Bristol Motor Speedway. Glotzbach is listed in good condition and his family reports that he was "feeling much better" Sunday. BRISTOL, Tenn. — As the green flag fell at the beginning of the Scotts Saturday Night Special, 12 legends barreled into turn one, taking thousands of race fans at Bristol Motor Speedway back in time. The 35-lap feature turned into a battle between Sterling Marlin and Rusty Wallace, but in the end, Marlin had the field covered, winning $25000 for a charity of his choice. Id like to thank all the guys on my crew, Marlin said. Everything worked perfect. Id like to thank the fans for sticking around and watching this. Marlins celebrity partner Andy Petree won his 15-lap heat in the celebrity portion of the event, allowing Marlin to start on the pole. Marlin took it from there, holding off a field of drivers that included Junior Johnson, Cale Yarborough, Harry Gant and LD Ottinger.
